What is an adtech engineer?

Adtech Engineers are technology professionals who design, develop, and maintain software systems used in the digital advertising industry. They work on platforms that enable the buying, selling, targeting, and analysis of online ads, such as ad servers, real-time bidding systems, and data management platforms. Their role often involves integrating advertising technologies, optimizing ad delivery, and ensuring compliance with privacy regulations. Adtech Engineers collaborate with product managers, data scientists, and marketers to deliver effective advertising solutions.

What are some common challenges an adtech engineer faces when integrating new advertising technologies with existing platforms?

Adtech Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating new advertising technologies, such as ensuring compatibility with legacy systems, maintaining data privacy compliance, and minimizing disruption to current ad delivery pipelines. Balancing rapid implementation with thorough testing can be complex, especially given the fast-paced evolution of ad tech standards and third-party tools. Successful engineers proactively collaborate with product managers, data teams, and external vendors to troubleshoot issues and develop scalable solutions that support the organization's advertising objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an adtech engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Adtech Engineer, you need a solid background in computer science, programming (especially JavaScript, Python, or Java), and a clear understanding of digital advertising technologies and protocols. Familiarity with ad servers, programmatic platforms (like Google Ad Manager or The Trade Desk), SDKs, APIs, and industry certifications such as IAB Digital Ad Operations are highly valued. Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills help you navigate complex integrations and work effectively with product, sales, and analytics teams. These skills are essential to optimize ad delivery, ensure technical compliance, and drive successful advertising outcomes in a rapidly evolving ecosystem.

Job description

What You'll Do:

Nexxen's SSP Software Development team is building and running a high-throughput SSP that processes hundreds of billions of real-time ad requests a day. You'll own complex, ambiguous problems end-to-end, apply an AI-first mindset to solve hard AdTech problems, and raise the bar for the team through code review and mentorship — with performance, scalability, and operational excellence guiding every project.

This role will be based in the Bellevue, WA office. Our team follows a hybrid schedule working in-office three days a week and remotely for the rest.

This is an exempt position.

Each day can be different here at Nexxen, but some of the things you can expect to be doing daily are:
  • Own complex initiatives end-to-end: design, implementation, integration, rollout, and operation
  • Apply an AI-first mindset to software development and data exploration
  • Integrate with DSPs, SSPs, third-party data providers, and standards such as OpenRTB and VAST
  • Build high-throughput, low-latency services with efficient caching and in-memory stores (Redis, Kafka, Aerospike)
  • Apply an SRE mindset: observability, incident response, capacity planning, and a shared on-call pager rotation
  • Raise the technical bar through code review, mentorship, and process/tooling decisions
  • Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks in systems processing billions of transactions/day
  • Drive test, monitoring, and automation coverage, including load and acceptance testing
  • Partner with product, ops, and engineering teams to shape roadmap and architecture
What you'll bring:
  • BS/MS (preferred) in Computer Science,Engineering, or related field
  • 5+ years of expert-level JavaScript/Node backend experience at scale
  • Strong grounding in distributed systems: scaling, fault tolerance, caching, load balancing
  • Solid fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, and systems design
  • Hands-on with distributed databases (Aerospike, Redis) and streaming pipelines (Kafka, Kinesis)
  • Strong SQL/RDBMS, Linux, networking, and Git skills
  • Track record of code review and mentorship that raises the bar for other engineers
  • Test-first mindset with automated acceptance and load testing
  • Excellent communicator and strong team player
  • AdTech industry experience strongly preferred

In support of pay transparency and equity, the minimum and maximum full-time annual base salary for this role is $180,000 - $200,000 the time of posting, with the potential of an incentive or bonus. While this is our reasonable expectation this is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, actual compensation is influenced by a wide range of factors including but not limited to skill set, level of experience, education, certifications, responsibility, and geographic location. Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location. We offer a variety of benefits, including medical, dental, vision, disability insurance, 401(k), EAP, parental leave, unlimited vacation, and company-paid holidays. The specific programs and options available will vary depending on the state, start date, and employment type.
