What is an adjunct faculty librarian?

Adjunct faculty librarians are part-time academic librarians who typically work on a temporary or contractual basis at colleges or universities. They may provide reference services, teach information literacy classes, manage library resources, or support research activities. Unlike full-time librarians, adjuncts often work fewer hours and may not have the same benefits or job security. Their roles are essential in supporting the academic mission of the institution, especially during peak times or when specialized expertise is needed.

How does an adjunct faculty librarian typically collaborate with full-time staff and faculty to support student success?

Adjunct Faculty Librarians often work closely with full-time librarians and teaching faculty to design and deliver library instruction, develop research guides, and provide reference services. They usually participate in departmental meetings, contribute to collection development, and may support special projects or outreach initiatives. Collaboration is key, as adjunct librarians coordinate schedules and share insights to ensure students receive consistent, high-quality support. Building relationships with faculty helps tailor resources and instruction to specific course needs, enhancing the overall learning experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an adjunct faculty librarian, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Adjunct Faculty Librarian, you typically need a master's degree in library science (MLS/MLIS), strong research skills, and knowledge of information literacy instruction. Familiarity with library management systems, digital databases, and reference management tools is essential. Excellent communication, adaptability, and collaboration skills help librarians effectively assist diverse student populations and work with faculty. These skills ensure the delivery of quality library services, support student learning, and facilitate the integration of library resources into academic programs.
