Additive Manufacturing Engineer Remote information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Additive Manufacturing Engineer (Remote), and why are they important?

To thrive as an Additive Manufacturing Engineer (Remote), you need a strong background in engineering principles, 3D printing technologies, and materials science, usually supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with CAD software, simulation tools, and experience with additive manufacturing systems such as FDM, SLS, or SLA, as well as familiarity with industry standards or certifications like ASTM or ISO, is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective virtual communication are crucial soft skills for remote collaboration and project management. These competencies ensure the engineer can design, optimize, and deliver high-quality parts while collaborating efficiently with distributed teams.

What does an Additive Manufacturing Engineer do when working remotely?

An Additive Manufacturing Engineer working remotely is responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing 3D printing processes and products from a remote location. They collaborate with teams using digital tools to create prototypes, analyze data, and troubleshoot issues related to additive manufacturing. Remote engineers may also oversee workflow, ensure quality standards are met, and support the integration of new technologies, all while communicating with clients and colleagues virtually.

What is the difference between Additive Manufacturing Engineer Remote vs Additive Manufacturing Technician?

AspectAdditive Manufacturing Engineer RemoteAdditive Manufacturing Technician
CredentialsBachelor's or higher in engineering, certifications like AM-specific trainingTechnical diploma or associate degree, hands-on training
Work EnvironmentRemote office, design and development focusOn-site manufacturing floor, equipment operation
Industry UsageDesign, process optimization, project managementMachine setup, maintenance, part fabrication

The main difference is that Additive Manufacturing Engineers Remote focus on designing and optimizing additive processes remotely, while Additive Manufacturing Technicians work hands-on with equipment on-site. Engineers typically require higher education and perform planning tasks, whereas Technicians handle daily machine operations and maintenance.

What are some common challenges faced by remote Additive Manufacturing Engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Additive Manufacturing Engineers often encounter challenges related to limited hands-on access to equipment and real-time collaboration with on-site teams. To overcome these obstacles, it's important to establish clear communication channels, utilize remote monitoring tools, and coordinate closely with local operators for prototyping and testing. Regular virtual meetings and detailed documentation help ensure project timelines stay on track and technical issues are resolved efficiently. Embracing digital collaboration platforms and maintaining flexibility can significantly enhance productivity and team integration.

Job description

We are currently seeking a Sales Manager, 3D Print, to support and grow our additive manufacturing equipment and services business. Our company is very enthusiastic in the adoption and promotion of additive manufacturing technologies to simplify, strengthen, and bring responsiveness to the supply chain. NCS will rely on your experience and knowledge to consult, specify, and sell high-end 3D printing equipment from a number of industry-leading OEMs, including HP, Ultimaker, and AM Solutions, along with our 3D printing services. The commercial and enterprise sales territory is the upper East Coast. Meanwhile, the civilian government agencies, military, and Federal System Integrator (FSI) territories extend across the country.

This is a primarily outside, field-based, sales role focusing on new business development ("hunter" mentality), strategic account penetration, and closing high-value equipment opportunities. The role requires minimal in-office presence, with the expectation of periodic visits (1โ€“2x per month or as needed) to the Manassas, VA headquarters for internal alignment, training, and team collaboration. The ideal candidate is an experienced, disciplined, self-starter salesperson who can operate independently in the field, while effectively leveraging internal resources, systems, and team support to close business. On target earnings (OTE) are set for $125k - $150k. This is a combination of salary and sales achievement incentives.

LOCATION REQUIREMENTS:

- Candidates must reside within a four-hour driving distance of Washington, DC.

- This position supports clients throughout the Upper East Coast and requires regular, overnight travel.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

โ€ข Outside Sales
- Complete prospecting of potential clients based on agreed markets and territory.
- Proactively identify and secure new client opportunities through cold calling, networking, and attending trade shows.
- Nurture and follow up with leads to generate meetings, both online and face to face, that move the client towards a purchase.
- Study, understand, and advocate for changes to technical and business requirements to make it both favorable for NCS and beneficial for clients.
- If a sale to a government entity requires an underlying contract vehicle, consult with NCS colleagues and provide the client with proper advice.
- Develop and maintain relationships with relevant sales organization and personnel of strategic OEM partners and leverage such relationships to acquire leads and preferential pricing.
- In-person visits to potential and current clients.
- In-depth follow-up on leads provided by Marketing, OEMs, and other sources, including initial contact made by inside sales people.
- Maintain accurate, up-to-date records of all sales leads, results, and forecasts using current and future CRM protocols.
- Provide accurate quotes, literature, and application details to sales and clients as requested.
- Participate in all activities of the sales process that involve clients, outside sales, and other departments.
- Be a source of up to date product knowledge regarding current offerings including hardware and materials.

โ€ข Internal Support
- Maintain data regarding quotes, price list, CRM, and OEM literature.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams-including Purchasing, Marketing, and Logistics-to resolve client issues related to orders, shipments, installations, and ongoing service.
- Support Service and Demo Room production with client communications and appropriate escalation.
- Provide input and advice to Marketing to improve outcomes of their efforts.
- Develop and draft innovative ideas for incorporation by the Proposal Development team into NCS proposals.
- Coordinate initial Government paperwork and procurement handling for processing.
- Adhere to internal NCS procedures for order processing.
- Support Marketing efforts involving campaigns and tradeshows, with occasional overnight travel.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

- Minimum 5 years experience of successful sales experience involving capital equipment, technology solutions, manufacturing systems, or similarly complex sales opportunities.
- Experience selling complex capital equipment, advance manufacturing technologies, industrial automation, engineering solutions, or additive manufacturing equipment.
- "Hunter" mentality to identify, pursue, and close deals.
- Excellent time management for arranging and attending in-person and virtual client meetings, while maintaining and coordinating inside sales support and order processing.
- Strong work ethic and ability to independently multi-task on a sustained basis, based on objectives.
- Mastery of the English language, both spoken and written.
- Proven ability to navigate the federal contracting lifecycle, from RFP response to contract execution.
- Ability to adhere to a Work in Office (WIO)/Work from Home (WFH) schedule as needed.
- Must be able to maintain a suitable working environment at place of residence to project a professional image in on-line meetings with other parties.
- Willing and able to travel frequently by car, commercial airlines, and other means when appropriate.
- Strong interpersonal networking skills and able to build relationships with individuals with diverse personalities.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

- Working knowledge of FAR/DFARS and Government/DoD procurement practices.
