What is addiction recovery?

Addiction recovery is the process through which individuals overcome dependence on substances or behaviors that negatively impact their lives. Recovery often involves a combination of medical treatment, counseling, support groups, and lifestyle changes. The goal is to achieve and maintain sobriety, improve overall well-being, and rebuild relationships and daily functioning. Recovery is a lifelong journey that can include setbacks, but with the right support, many people achieve lasting positive change.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an addiction recovery counselor, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Addiction Recovery Counselor, you need a background in psychology, counseling, or social work, often supported by a relevant degree and state certification or licensure. Familiarity with treatment planning software, case management systems, and evidence-based therapeutic approaches like CBT or motivational interviewing is typically required. Exceptional listening, empathy, and motivational skills help build trust and encourage positive change in clients. These skills are essential for effectively guiding individuals through recovery and supporting their long-term well-being.

Professionals in addiction recovery often encounter challenges such as managing emotionally charged situations, supporting clients through relapse, and maintaining personal boundaries while providing empathetic care. It can be emotionally taxing to witness setbacks, but regular supervision, peer support, and ongoing training are key to managing these stresses. Many organizations encourage self-care practices and offer professional development opportunities to help staff build resilience and stay effective in their roles.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct thorough assessments of individuals seeking treatment for substance use disorders in order to identify their unique needs, strengths, and challenges.

  • Provide individual therapy sessions utilizing modalities such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and motivational interviewing to help clients establish coping strategies and achieve their goals.
  • Facilitate engaging group therapy sessions, fostering a supportive community environment where individuals can share experiences, gain insights, and support one another in their recovery.
  • Work collaboratively with psychiatrists and addiction specialists to provide cohesive and coordinated care that addresses all aspects of a patientโ€™s well-being.
  • Provide crisis intervention and immediate support during substance-related emergencies, ensuring patients have access to the help they need when they need it most.
  • Educate patients and their families about addiction, recovery processes, relevant community resources, and coping strategies to enhance understanding and facilitate healing.
  • Maintain detailed and confidential records of patient interactions and progress in accordance with legal, ethical, and organizational standards.
  • Participate actively in team meetings and case consultations, contributing insights and sharing best practices to enhance team effectiveness and patient care.
  • Engage in continuous professional development through training and keeping up-to-date with advancements in addiction treatment and mental health practices.
Patient Population / Client Focus

In this role, you will primarily work with individuals affected by substance use disordersโ€”a diverse population navigating various challenges associated with addiction. You will be providing support to both adults and adolescents, tailoring your therapeutic approaches to meet the specific needs of each patient. Collaborating with families will also be an integral part of your work, as you empower them with knowledge and strategies to support their loved ones effectively.

Qualifications
  • Master's degree or higher in Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, Mental Health Counseling, or Psychology from an accredited institution.
  • Valid and current licensure as an LMFT, LPC, or LCSW in the state of Oregon.
  • Proven knowledge of substance use disorders, including current recovery-oriented strategies and evidence-based treatment methodologies.
  • Experience delivering both individual and group therapy specifically in addiction treatment settings.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, demonstrating a non-judgmental and empathetic approach.
  • Ability to uphold professional ethics while maintaining patient confidentiality and navigating sensitive situations with care.
  • Proficiency in using electronic health record (EHR) systems and related software applications.
  • Capacity to collaborate effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team, enhancing comprehensive patient care.
Preferred Experience
  • A minimum of one year of relevant clinical experience directly related to mental health counseling or addiction treatment is required.
  • Experience working in telehealth settings is a plus, helping you to maximize engagement with patients in a virtual environment.
Compensation and Benefits

The salary for this position ranges from $80,000 to $100,000 per year, in addition to potential bonuses. As part of our commitment to your well-being, we offer a comprehensive benefits package that includes:
