Actuator Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Actuator Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Actuator Engineer, you generally need a solid background in mechanical or electrical engineering, with expertise in electromechanical systems and motion control. Familiarity with CAD software, simulation tools (such as MATLAB/Simulink), and industry certifications in automation or mechatronics is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork skills help an actuator engineer excel in both design and troubleshooting contexts. These competencies ensure the reliable development and integration of actuators, which are critical for the performance and safety of automated systems.

What are the typical challenges Actuator Engineers face when integrating actuators into complex systems?

Actuator Engineers often encounter challenges related to ensuring compatibility between actuators and the mechanical, electrical, or control systems they interact with. Common issues include managing space constraints, meeting strict performance requirements, mitigating unwanted vibrations, and ensuring reliable communication with control units. Successful Actuator Engineers collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams, including mechanical designers, software developers, and system integrators, to address these challenges and optimize actuator performance within the overall system.

What does an Actuator Engineer do?

An Actuator Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and testing actuators, which are devices that convert energy into motion in mechanical systems. They work on selecting appropriate actuator types (such as electric, hydraulic, or pneumatic), ensuring the devices meet technical requirements, and integrating them into larger systems. Actuator Engineers often collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to optimize performance, reliability, and efficiency of the actuators in applications like robotics, automotive, aerospace, and industrial automation.

Does Lockheed Martin hire controls engineers?

Lockheed Martin hires controls engineers, including actuator engineers, for roles involving automation, control systems, and embedded systems design. Candidates typically need a background in electrical or mechanical engineering, experience with control algorithms, and familiarity with tools like MATLAB or Simulink. Job opportunities are available across various locations and often require security clearances for defense-related projects.

What is the difference between Actuator Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectActuator EngineerMechanical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical, Electrical, or Mechatronics Engineering; often certifications in control systemsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering; may include certifications in CAD or project management
Work EnvironmentDesigning and testing actuators, working in R&D labs or manufacturing facilitiesDesigning mechanical systems, working in design offices, manufacturing plants, or field sites
Industry UsageAutomotive, aerospace, robotics, industrial automationAutomotive, aerospace, manufacturing, product design

While both roles involve engineering principles, Actuator Engineers focus specifically on designing and developing actuators used in automation and robotics, whereas Mechanical Engineers have a broader scope, working on various mechanical systems and components across industries.

At Raytheon, the foundation of everything we do is rooted in our values and a higher calling – to help our nation and allies defend freedoms and deter aggression. We bring the strength of more than 100 years of experience and renowned engineering expertise to meet the needs of today’s mission and stay ahead of tomorrow’s threat. Our team solves tough, meaningful problems that create a safer, more secure world.

The Precision Control Actuation System organization staffs mechanical engineers for a variety of roles supporting primarily control section Integrated Product Teams. You will be expected to flex responsibilities based on the current needs of the organization and their respective skill sets.

What You Will Do

  • At this grade level, you will be expected to work autonomously with limited oversight, have advanced understanding of the Systems Engineering domain, manage small projects that enhance PCAS organization around assigned program work, and provide guidance to other professionals.

  • Support may include but is not limited to detailed systems design, test design and execution, systems engineering, proposals and estimates, or earned value management.

  • In this position, the candidate will be responsible for developing technical solutions for a wide range of high performance actuation system and motion control challenges, such as aerodynamic steering, thrust vectoring, attitude and divert maneuvering, pointing, and stabilizing of missile systems & subsystems.

  • Responsibility will cover a portion of the life cycle of the product, from conceptualizing and design, to prototyping and manufacturing, integration and verification testing, through production support.

  • You will be expected to apply sound systems engineering principles to define and solve sometimes complex system problems while influencing engineering teams to include electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, control systems engineering, software and firmware engineering, manufacturing engineering, supply chain and others.

  • The position will address requirements development for actuation systems, sub-units, modules and software/firmware; improve systems tools and processes for actuation systems; aid development of Modular Open System Architecture (MOSA) standards; leverage Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) practices for actuation systems; enhance standardized actuation system architectures with modularity, scalability and adaptability; improve standardized verification methods and approaches for Design Verification Testing, Qualification Testing and Acceptance Test; create re-usable and scalable design and development documents to maximize cross-program efficiency. The candidate working with the multi-disciplinary actuation team will implement these systems engineering practices on program applications and influence continuous improvement methodologies to increase efficiency and eliminate systemic issues.

  • Day-to-day activities are highly collaborative, both internally across Raytheon as well as externally with suppliers, partners and customers.
