What is an actuarial intern?

Actuarial Interns are students or recent graduates who work temporarily in actuarial departments, typically within insurance companies, consulting firms, or financial institutions. They assist professional actuaries by analyzing statistical data, constructing models, and helping to assess financial risks. Internships provide practical experience with real-world data and exposure to industry-standard software and techniques. This role is valuable for those pursuing an actuarial career, as it helps them develop relevant skills and prepares them for professional actuarial exams.

What does an actuarial intern do?

An actuarial intern provides support to junior and senior level actuaries in an insurance firm or other business settings. As an actuarial intern, your job duties are to gather data, analyze risk, and prepare reports. Your responsibilities as an actuarial intern are to build mathematical models and to predict the probability and risk of future events. Your internship is an opportunity to collaborate with actuarial project teams, attend workshops, learn a variety of methods, and practice the technical skills of an actuary’s career.

What types of projects or tasks can an actuarial intern typically expect to work on during their internship?

As an Actuarial Intern, you can expect to support experienced actuaries with tasks such as data analysis, preparing reports, and assisting in the development of models for pricing, reserving, or risk assessment. Interns often work with large datasets, perform research, and may help automate processes using tools like Excel, SQL, or specialized actuarial software. Collaboration with other teams—like underwriting or finance—is common, offering valuable exposure to how actuarial work supports overall business decisions. This hands-on experience helps build both technical and communication skills, which are essential for a future actuarial career.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an actuarial intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Actuarial Intern, you typically need strong mathematical and statistical skills, proficiency in data analysis, and progress toward actuarial exams such as those from the Society of Actuaries (SOA) or Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS). Familiarity with actuarial software, Excel, and programming languages like Python or R is often required. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication help interns interpret data and present findings clearly. These skills are crucial for supporting actuarial teams in assessing risk and informing business decisions.
