What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ACSM Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist (CEP), and why are they important?

To excel as an ACSM Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist (CEP), you need a solid background in exercise science, clinical assessment, and chronic disease management, typically supported by a relevant degree and the ACSM-CEP certification. Familiarity with tools such as metabolic carts, ECG monitoring, and specialized exercise testing software is crucial. Outstanding interpersonal skills, empathy, and the ability to educate and motivate clients set top professionals apart in this field. These competencies ensure safe, effective exercise programming for individuals with medical conditions, leading to better health outcomes and client adherence.

What is an ACSM Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist (ACSM-CEP)?

An ACSM Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist (ACSM-CEP) is a health professional trained to assess, plan, and implement exercise programs for individuals with chronic diseases or health conditions. They work primarily in clinical settings, such as hospitals or rehabilitation centers, helping patients improve their health and manage conditions like heart disease, diabetes, or pulmonary disorders through exercise. To become an ACSM-CEP, individuals must have a relevant degree and pass a certification exam administered by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). This certification demonstrates advanced knowledge in exercise physiology, risk assessment, and clinical exercise testing.

How does an ACSM Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist (CEP) typically collaborate with other healthcare professionals in a clinical setting?

As an ACSM Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist (CEP), collaboration with other healthcare professionals is a key part of the role. CEPs often work closely with physicians, nurses, physical therapists, and dietitians to design and implement comprehensive exercise programs for patients with chronic diseases or medical conditions. This multidisciplinary approach ensures that patient care is coordinated and evidence-based, and it often involves regular team meetings, sharing progress reports, and adjusting exercise prescriptions based on feedback from the broader healthcare team. Effective communication skills and a commitment to patient-centered care are essential for success in this collaborative environment.

Role Overview

Our client is looking for a qualified Cardiac Stress Technician to support nuclear cardiology procedures at their Dallas, TX outpatient location. This role works directly alongside the Nuclear Medicine Technologist and supervising physician โ€” handling patient preparation, IV access, physiologic monitoring, and stress test execution for both exercise and pharmacologic protocols.

This is not an imaging role. The Cardiac Stress Technician provides clinical support and emergency response within their scope of practice, and does not perform or interpret nuclear medicine scans. Volume starts part-time and is expected to grow with the market.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Preparation & Assessment

  • Obtain and document patient history, vital signs, and pre-procedure assessments
  • Prepare patients for nuclear medicine and nuclear cardiology examinations
  • Assist with patient positioning and procedural preparation
  • Educate patients on what to expect during stress testing and imaging

IV Access & Monitoring

  • Establish and maintain intravenous access for imaging and stress testing procedures
  • Monitor ECG rhythm, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and patient symptoms throughout exercise and pharmacologic stress testing
  • Identify and report abnormal findings or adverse reactions to the supervising physician immediately

Stress Testing Support

  • Execute exercise treadmill and pharmacologic stress protocols under physician supervision
  • Apply working knowledge of ACC/AHA stress testing indications, contraindications, and termination criteria
  • Assist with pharmacologic stress agents including adenosine, regadenoson, and dobutamine administration and adverse effect management
  • Assist physicians and Nuclear Medicine Technologists during testing procedures

Emergency Response & Documentation

  • Ensure emergency equipment and medications are available and operational at all times
  • Respond to medical emergencies and provide advanced life support interventions within scope of practice
  • Assist with patient recovery and discharge instructions
  • Maintain accurate patient care documentation and comply with HIPAA and infection control standards
Scope of Practice โ€” Important

This role does not perform nuclear medicine imaging, interpret diagnostic images, administer radiopharmaceuticals (unless specifically authorized), or independently supervise nuclear stress testing.

Who Will Succeed

This role suits a clinical professional who is calm under pressure, confident with IVs and ECG monitoring, and takes patient safety personally. You know stress testing cold โ€” the protocols, the red flags, and when to call it. You work well alongside physicians and imaging staff without needing to be managed.

  • You hold an active RN, ACSM-CEP/EP, or Paramedic credential and are in good standing
  • You have at least 1 year of cardiac stress testing experience and can run a test independently
  • You know the ACC/AHA termination criteria by heart and apply them with confidence
  • You're comfortable with pharmacologic agents โ€” adenosine, regadenoson, dobutamine โ€” and their reversal agents
  • You communicate clearly and concisely with supervising physicians and imaging staff
  • You adapt to part-time or variable scheduling without it affecting your clinical performance
Experience & Skills

Required:

  • One of the following active credentials in good standing: Registered Nurse (RN), ACSM Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist (ACSM-CEP or equivalent), or Licensed Paramedic
  • Texas state license or certification in good standing for applicable credential
  • Minimum 1 year of cardiac stress testing experience
  • Current BLS certification
  • Current ACLS certification
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ACC/AHA stress testing indications, contraindications, and absolute/relative termination criteria
  • Familiarity with pharmacologic stress agents and reversal agent administration
  • Strong patient assessment and emergency response skills
  • Ability to work on-site in Dallas, TX โ€” Central Time
  • Strong written and verbal communication โ€” clear clinical documentation required
  • AI-fluent โ€” actively uses AI tools to support documentation, scheduling coordination, or patient communication; will be confirmed at screening

Preferred:

  • Experience in outpatient or mobile nuclear cardiology settings
  • Familiarity with nuclear cardiology workflows and imaging room protocols
  • Experience working alongside Nuclear Medicine Technologists
