Scope of Job
To support the university's energy management program by performing complex technical journeyman level work involving the installation, operation, maintenance, modification, overhaul, troubleshooting, and/or repair of sophisticated computerized automatic, electronic, electrical, and pneumatic building automation control systems. Works under minimal supervision, with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
Description of Duties
  • Installs, monitors, and performs service on building automation systems and provides preventive maintenance on BAS panels, controllers, actuators, sensors and other equipment and related devices on campus buildings.
  • Completes assigned work orders by entering proper data in computerized maintenance management system. Documents all work performed, hours worked and materials used to comply with department processes and procedures.
  • Documents all scheduled actions performed to comply with compliance rules, regulations, and best management practices applicable to the design, installation, and operation of HVAC, electrical, and electronic related systems that are connected to the building automation.
  • Responds to deficiencies affecting BAS component power sources; communication protocols such as MODBUS, BACnet, proprietary, and Ethernet for BAS devices within a building as well as with the BAS front-end software; and hard-wired BAS connections.
  • Installs, monitors and calibrates building automation components and systems.
  • Utilizes laptop or computer-based building automation software, electronic instruments and tools to troubleshoot, replace, and repair building automation system components, such as sensors, actuators, valves, direct digital controls, variable frequency drives and other types of related equipment.
  • Works in conjunction with facilities management, safety, and other staff personnel to ensure proper operation of HVAC equipment and controls for optimum safety, security and indoor air quality and comfort.
  • Responds 24/7 to emergencies involving building automation system and controls.
  • Communicates with others in order to gain an understanding of specific needs and/or provides technical advice.
  • Trends energy management system and related data for troubleshooting and reporting.
  • Assists other crews in the areas of controls and troubleshooting of HVAC, and equipment and components such as boilers, pumps, valves, motors, and duct heaters.
  • Fulfills position on call and rotating shift if required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education
High School Diploma or GED, and post-secondary education in HVAC technology, building automation, and/or electronics technology or related course of study from a vocational school or community college.

Registered Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (ACR) Technician
Preferred: Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) Certified Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (ACR) Technician.
As condition of employment this position requires the applicant to be authorized to operate a University-Owned Vehicle for Official University Business. Per University of Texas System Policy 157, applicants will be subject to a motor vehicle record check for their most recent thirty-six (36) month history. Out of State Drivers are required to submit a 36-month history MVR from their prior State of residence(s).

  • One (1) year of the required experience with an Associate's degree in a related field.

Knowledge and skill in the use of test equipment, meters, generators, and all equipment used in the hvac, electronics, electrical, automation controls or and fire alarm trade. Use of personal computer and standard office equipment.
Working Conditions
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. This position is considered essential during a campus emergency. The incumbent in this position is expected to report to campus, provide the essential services designated. Industrial, office and educational environment. Some travel and weekend work is required. Work involves occasionally having to respond to emergencies on a 24/7 basis. Duties may involve the lifting and moving of heavy objects, stooping, crawling, climbing, reaching, and other activities requiring physical exertion. Some work is in restricted spaces with exposure to dust. Some duties and working conditions may create bodily strain and discomfort. Danger of falls, electrical shock and burns are hazards and conditions inherent to the trade or assignment. Will be occasionally exposed to outside environments such as hot, dry, wet or cold. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
Other
Knowledge of general principles and theories of air conditioning and heating control systems and safety regulations. Ability to understand and follow directions; to work from blueprints and sketches; to maintain proper heating, ventilation, and air conditioning control levels; to diagnose malfunctioning building control systems; to maintain records; and to communicate effectively. Position requires the use of personal protective equipment in the form of safety shoes, safety glasses and protective eyewear.
To the extent this position requires the holder to research, work on, or have access to critical infrastructure as defined in Section 117.001(2) of the Texas Business and Commerce Code, the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the critical infrastructure is a minimum qualification to be hired and to continue to be employed in the position.
