How much do acquisitions tax jobs pay per year?

As of Sep 8, 2026, the average yearly pay for acquisitions tax in the United States is $129,367.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $111,000.00 and $145,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is acquisitions tax?

Acquisitions tax refers to the specialized area of tax law and compliance concerning the purchase, merger, or acquisition of businesses or assets. An acquisitions tax professional advises companies on the tax implications of these transactions, helps structure deals in a tax-efficient manner, and ensures compliance with relevant tax laws and regulations. Their work includes due diligence, risk assessment, and identifying tax-saving opportunities during mergers and acquisitions. This role often requires close collaboration with legal, finance, and corporate development teams.

How does an acquisitions tax professional typically collaborate with legal and finance teams during a transaction?

Acquisitions Tax professionals play a critical role in transaction teams by working closely with both legal and finance departments. They review deal structures to ensure tax efficiency, analyze potential tax risks, and help draft tax-related clauses in purchase agreements. Regular communication with legal teams ensures regulatory compliance, while coordination with finance supports accurate valuation and integration planning. This collaborative approach helps facilitate smoother transactions and optimizes overall deal value.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an acquisitions tax specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Acquisitions Tax Specialist, you need a solid understanding of tax law, mergers and acquisitions (M&A), and accounting principles, typically supported by a degree in accounting, finance, or law, and often a CPA or similar certification. Familiarity with tax compliance software, financial modeling tools, and due diligence platforms is essential for managing complex transactions. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaboration and precise reporting. These competencies ensure accurate risk assessment, compliance, and successful integration during acquisition processes.
