How much do acoustic engineering jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 12, 2026, the average yearly pay for acoustic engineering in the United States is $107,902.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $94,000.00 and $117,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by acoustic engineers when working on large-scale projects?

Acoustic engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing sound quality with architectural or structural constraints, managing noise control in complex environments, and coordinating with multidisciplinary teams. Large-scale projects may require creative solutions to meet client expectations while adhering to regulations and budget limitations. Effective communication with architects, contractors, and clients is essential to ensure that acoustic considerations are integrated throughout the project lifecycle.

What is acoustic engineering?

Acoustic engineering is a branch of engineering focused on the study and control of sound and vibration. Acoustic engineers design, analyze, and improve systems related to noise control, sound quality, and audio technology in various environments, such as buildings, vehicles, and concert halls. Their work helps ensure optimal sound experiences, reduce unwanted noise, and solve problems related to vibrations. They often collaborate with architects, product designers, and environmental specialists to implement effective acoustic solutions.

What is the difference between Acoustic Engineering vs Audio Engineering?

AspectAcoustic EngineeringAudio Engineering
Required CredentialsBachelor's or master's in acoustics, engineering, or physicsBachelor's in audio engineering, music production, or related fields
Work EnvironmentConstruction sites, laboratories, architectural firmsRecording studios, live venues, broadcasting stations
Industry UsageBuilding design, noise control, sound system installationMusic production, live sound, broadcasting

Acoustic Engineering focuses on designing and controlling sound within environments, often involving construction and technical applications. Audio Engineering centers on recording, mixing, and producing sound for entertainment and media. While both roles involve sound, their work settings, skills, and goals differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Acoustic Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Acoustic Engineer, you need a solid background in physics, mathematics, and engineering principles, usually supported by a degree in acoustical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with specialized simulation software (such as EASE or MATLAB), measurement tools, and acoustic modeling systems is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and explain complex concepts to clients. These skills ensure accurate analysis, innovative solutions, and successful project outcomes in various environments where sound quality and control are critical.

JOB SUMMARY

Apptronik is seeking a Senior Audio Engineer specializing in acoustics to lead the design, analysis, and optimization of sound performance across products and environments. This role combines deep technical expertise in acoustic engineering with hands-on testing and cross-functional collaboration to deliver high-quality audio experiences.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES or KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Lead the application of acoustic engineering principles within robotics systems, supporting mechatronic and system-level integration and mitigating vibration, motion-induced noise, and environmental variabilityย
  • Perform acoustic simulations, modeling, and analysis to predict and optimize sound behavior
  • Conduct lab and field testing, including frequency response, distortion, noise, and vibration analysis
  • Develop and validate acoustic requirements, specifications, and test methodologies
  • Analyze and troubleshoot sound quality issues, including noise, resonance, and interference
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and DSP teams to integrate acoustic solutions
  • Optimize audio performance through enclosure design, material selection, and tuning
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership within the team
  • Document designs, test results, and engineering decisions

SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Strong understanding of acoustics principles (wave propagation, resonance, etc)
  • Exposure to robotics systems, including mechatronics and system-level integration, with experience applying acoustic engineering principles in dynamic environments and familiarity with challenges such as vibration, motion-induced noise, and environmental variabilityย
  • Experience with acoustic measurement tools (e.g., microphones, analyzers, DAQ, anechoic chambers)
  • Experience in a specific domain (consumer electronics, automotive audio, or pro audio systems)
  • Familiarity with DSP (Digital Signal Processing) and audio tuning
  • Knowledge of vibration and structural dynamics
  • Experience with standards and compliance testing (e.g., ISO, IEC acoustic standards)
  • Proficiency in simulation and modeling tools
  • Hands-on experience with sound testing and data analysis
  • Advanced problem-solving and analytical thinking
  • Strong attention to detail and sound quality perception
  • Ability to translate subjective feedback into measurable improvements
