Job description

Summary: A Medical Laboratory Technician is required to perform routine medical laboratory tests for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease under direct supervision of a qualified supervisor. Responsible for operation of the laboratory.

Essential Functions: To accomplish this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation, each essential function satisfactorily under direct supervision of a qualified supervisor. Early morning or evening shift.


ยท Perform technical laboratory functions including chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, immunology and /or other discipline(s) according to approved policies and procedures in which the individual has been trained.

ยท Report test results following approved laboratory protocols alerting clinicians about abnormal results.

ยท Ensure quality control, maintain integrity of samples, and maintain accurate record keeping.

ยท Maintain laboratory equipment and supplies.

ยท Set up, maintain, calibrate, clean, and troubleshoot medical laboratory instruments.

ยท Comply with all laboratory policies and OSHA, CAP, CLIA, and additional state regulations related to safety, cleanliness and infection control.

ยท Assist Lab Management as needed.

ยท Perform all other duties as assigned.

Skills:

ยท Knowledge of medical laboratory principles, standards, applications, terminology and tests.

ยท Knowledge of medical laboratory safety, cleanliness and infection control policies and regulations.

ยท Knowledge of medical laboratory equipment and instrument uses and maintenance.

ยท Accuracy โ€“ Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly.

ยท Communication โ€“ Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

ยท Computer Skills โ€“ Proficient ability to use a computer and electronic medical record.

Education and Experience:

ยท Associateโ€™s Degree or higher preferred

ยท One-year clinical laboratory experience preferred

Certification and Licensure:

ยท ASCP, AMT certification or NYS license preferred

Work Environment:

ยท Environmentally controlled clinical laboratory environment

ยท Fast paced environment with occasional high pressure or emergent situations

ยท Frequent exposure to bodily fluids

ยท Possible exposure to infectious specimens, communicable diseases, hazardous and toxic substances, and other conditions common to a laboratory environment

ยท Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as gloves or a faceshield

ยท Frequent interaction with a diverse population including team members, providers, patients, regulatory and accrediting agencies, and other members of the public

Physical Demands:

ยท Frequent standing, walking, grasping, carrying and speaking

ยท Occasional sitting, reaching, bending and stooping

ยท Lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling up to 50 pounds, with assistance if needed
