Job description

Our client, in the municipality and government space, is in need for an Accounting Specialist to join their team on a temp-to-hire basis! This is ideal for someone who can manage payroll, reconciliations, and day-to-day accounting activities while maintaining accurate records and responsive service. The role will contribute to reporting, compliance, and year-end preparation across multiple accounting functions.


Responsibilities:

• Process bi-weekly payroll for an employee group of approximately 50 staff members and ensure payroll records are accurate and timely.

• Perform routine reconciliations for bank accounts, general ledger balances, accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash receipts, and employee benefit invoices.

• Manage contract- and grant-related receivables, including tracking outstanding balances and posting incoming payments correctly - will provide training

• Support accounts payable, billing, and receivables workflows by reviewing transactions, preparing invoices, and confirming proper coding and entry.

• Assist with fiscal year-end activities by compiling audit support, preparing schedules, and contributing to payroll, budget, and financial reporting tasks.

• Investigate discrepancies in financial records and transaction reports, make corrections as needed, and respond to questions from internal stakeholders.

• Help maintain accounting systems and participate in process improvement efforts related to financial operations.

• Record financial activity in the general ledger, including revenue, payments, receipts, and journal adjustments, while maintaining organized supporting documentation.

• At least 2 years of experience in accounting, bookkeeping, payroll, or closely related financial support work.

• Practical knowledge of payroll, accounts receivable, billing, and account reconciliation.

• Experience using accounting software and payroll systems such as ADP, along with strong proficiency in Excel and Word.

• Ability to prepare and review journal entries, reconcile transactions, and identify the source of financial discrepancies.

• Solid mathematical, analytical, and organizational skills with strong attention to accuracy and completeness.

• High school diploma required; additional coursework in bookkeeping, business math, accounting, or a related field is preferred.
