Position Summary
The Tax Accountant is responsible for supporting sales and use tax compliance across a multi-state environment. This position supports the company's indirect tax compliance activities, focusing on preparing tax filings, managing exemption certificates, and ensuring accurate tax reporting and compliance with applicable regulations. The role focuses heavily on data gathering, basic return preparation, administrative support, and learning tax systems and processes. The Tax Accountant works closely with the Tax Manager and team to gain exposure to multi state compliance, tax audits, and process improvements. This role requires strong attention to detail, organization, and the ability to manage high-volume transactional data.
Essential Responsibilities & Expectations
  • Assist with the preparation, review, and filing of sales and use tax returns across multiple states and local jurisdictions, ensuring timely and accurate compliance with filing requirements
  • Extract, validate, and analyze transaction data and reports from ERP systems, tax engines, and reporting tools to support sales and use tax compliance, reporting, and return preparation
  • Perform data quality reviews and compliance testing to identify tax calculation issues, incorrect tax treatments, missing tax codes, exemption documentation deficiencies, and other reporting discrepancies, and assist in their resolution
  • Monitor tax rate and regulatory changes and assist with maintaining tax tables, jurisdiction assignments, and system configurations to support accurate tax calculations
  • Administer exemption and resale certificate programs, including collection, validation, renewal tracking, compliance review, secure storage, and coordination with customers and internal stakeholders to maintain current documentation
  • Support sales and use tax audits by gathering exemption certificates, transaction records, reconciliations, and other supporting documentation requested by auditors or taxing authorities
  • Ensure compliance with established internal controls, company policies, and tax compliance procedures
  • Partner with Sales, Accounts Receivable, Customer Service, and Operations teams to ensure exempt customer accounts are properly documented and maintained
  • Prepare and post journal entries related to sales and use tax activity, including accruals, adjustments, and other tax-related transactions
  • Assist in account reconciliations and analysis related to sales tax payable, use tax accruals, tax clearing accounts, and other tax-related balances
  • Identify opportunities to improve data quality, operational efficiency, reporting accuracy, and compliance processes through process enhancements and technology solutions
  • Assist in developing, maintaining, and updating tax procedures, process documentation, and internal control documentation
  • Work with large volumes of transactional data to support tax analysis, audit requests, reporting requirements, and compliance initiatives
  • Collaborate with Accounting and Finance teams to ensure the proper classification, recording, and reporting of tax-related transactions in accordance with company policies and accounting standards
  • Participate in special projects, system implementations, process improvement initiatives, and other assignments as directed by management

Qualifications
Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree or higher in Accounting is required
Minimum Experience:
  • 2-4 years of accounting or tax experience with exposure to sales and use tax in multi-state operations
  • Experience with an ERP and tax engine software
