Description:

As a Staff Accountant at the Stroum Jewish Community Center (SJCC), you will be responsible for performing general accounting duties in accordance with SJCC policies and procedures, generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), and local, state, and federal rules and regulations. Specifically, the Staff Accountant assists with preparation, review, and distribution of monthly departmental and agency financials, annual departmental and agency budgets, the annual audit, and overall support for the accounting interests of the various agency departments. This position is in-office, with the potential for hybrid work in the future.

Some of the duties and responsibilities of a Staff Accountant are to:

  • Prepare and enter journal entries to the general ledger.
  • Reconcile balance sheet items, bank accounts, accounts payable, and application of payments.
  • Distribute all labor expenses to the correct department.
  • Research, review, and respond to various staff accounting related inquiries.
  • Support material preparation and correspondence related to the annual audit.
  • Assist with varied accounting functions, such as excise tax filings and governmental license renewals.
  • Assist with ad hoc analysis and reports.
  • Provide back-up for accounts payable, including reviewing, approving & processing payment requests; entering expenses and payments into accounting system; and processing payments online or in-house.
  • Provide back-up for processing, reconciling, and reporting accounts receivable payments.
  • Complete special projects as assigned.
  • Recommend improvements to department processes and procedures.
  • Attend meetings, and build professional, positive relationships with SJCC staff and Board.
  • Assist with SJCC special events on occasion.
  • Practice and promote SJCC’s mission and values.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Requirements:

To be successful as a Staff Accountant, you should have:

  • A minimum of two years accounting experience.
  • A working knowledge of accounting principles and rules/regulations.
  • The ability to meet deadlines
  • Proficiency in Excel (including pivot tables).
  • Knowledge of accounting software and database software.
  • The ability to quickly learn and work with a variety of server and cloud-based software programs with minimal supervision.
  • The ability to read, analyze, and interpret financial reports, bank statements, and accounting regulations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • A customer-centric and collaborative attitude with a high level of empathy.
  • The ability to sequence objectives among competing priorities.
  • A creative and strategic mindset with strong problem-solving abilities.

Preferred Qualifications Include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance preferred.
  • CPA certification preferred.
