Job description

We are looking for an experienced Accounting Manager to lead core accounting operations for a mission-driven organization in Detroit, Michigan. This position will oversee daily financial activities, support accurate and timely reporting, and help ensure compliance across grant-funded and nonprofit accounting functions. The ideal candidate brings strong technical accounting knowledge, hands-on leadership experience, and the ability to collaborate effectively across teams.
Responsibilities:
• Direct the monthly close process, ensuring financial records are completed accurately and on schedule.
• Manage general ledger activity, including journal entries, reconciliations, and review of account balances.
• Oversee grant-related accounting to support proper tracking, reporting, and compliance with funding requirements.
• Prepare and review financial information used for internal reporting, budgeting, and external audit support.
• Lead nonprofit budgeting activities by monitoring actual results, analyzing variances, and coordinating with stakeholders.
• Supervise accounting staff, provide day-to-day guidance, and support the development of a productive team environment.
• Partner with internal departments to resolve accounting issues and improve the flow of financial information.
• Support audit readiness by maintaining organized documentation and responding to requests related to financial statement reviews.• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• At least 5 years of accounting experience in a nonprofit or government environment.
• Demonstrated knowledge of grant accounting, month-end close procedures, and nonprofit budgeting.
• Recent supervisory experience of 2 or more years with responsibility for at least two direct reports.
• Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel for analysis, reporting, and reconciliation work.
• Experience with general ledger management, journal entries, account reconciliations, and audit support.
• Effective communication skills with a collaborative approach and the ability to work well across teams.
