Job description

About Us

At Desert Rose Tax & Accounting, we don’t just file forms—we help people make better decisions with their money. We work with individuals and small businesses who value clarity, strategy, and proactive advice (and who appreciate answers that don’t require a decoder ring).

We’re looking for a CPA or EA who enjoys working directly with clients, thinking through real-world tax issues, and being part of a collaborative, steady team. This role is ideal for someone who wants meaningful client relationships—not just a stack of returns dropped on their desk.

If you like solving real problems, explaining tax concepts in plain English, and being trusted with responsibility, you’ll fit right in. Bonus points if you can explain depreciation without watching someone’s soul leave their body. If you prefer zero client interaction and permanent hiding behind spreadsheets… this may not be your people.

This role is NOT a good fit if you:

  • Prefer minimal or no client interaction
  • Want a fully remote position
  • Are looking for a narrow, repetitive role with no planning or advisory work
  • Dislike collaboration, accountability, or deadlines that actually matter

Summary

The Tax Accountant is a client-facing role responsible for preparing and reviewing tax returns, meeting with clients to discuss tax matters, reviewing accounting work for tax accuracy, and assisting with planning, compliance, and resolution work. In short: real clients, real decisions, and real impact—no return-factory assembly line here.

Duties and Responsibilities (The Actual Work)

  • Prepare and review federal and state income tax returns for individuals and small businesses
  • Meet with clients to review returns, discuss tax positions, and provide guidance
  • Review bookkeeping and accounting work to ensure accuracy and tax readiness
  • Prepare and review financial statements, including profit & loss and balance sheets
  • Assist clients with tax planning and strategy throughout the year
  • Respond to IRS and state tax authority notices on behalf of clients
  • Assist with tax audits, notices, and resolution matters
  • Maintain awareness of filing deadlines and ensure timely compliance
  • Research tax issues and recommend alternative treatments to reduce tax burden where appropriate
  • Assist with implementation and improvement of tax and accounting processes
  • Coordinate with internal team members on client matters and special projects
  • Maintain confidentiality and professional standards at all times
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field
  • CPA or EA license required
  • 1–3 years of public accounting or tax preparation experience preferred
  • Strong understanding of individual and small business taxation
  • Solid accounting fundamentals and attention to detail
  • Ability to research tax issues and apply guidance appropriately
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Professional judgment, discretion, and reliability
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively

Competencies

  • Analytical Thinking – Synthesizes information, identifies issues, and applies sound judgment
  • Problem Solving – Identifies problems, evaluates options, and implements solutions
  • Client Communication – Explains complex tax concepts clearly and professionally
  • Technical Skills – Continues to build tax and accounting knowledge and shares expertise
  • Quality & Accuracy – Demonstrates thoroughness and attention to detail
  • Productivity – Manages time effectively and meets deadlines without sacrificing quality
  • Interpersonal Skills – Works well with clients and team members; maintains professionalism

Who Thrives Here (Self‑Selection Saves Everyone Time)

You’ll probably love working here if you:

  • Enjoy talking with clients and being seen as a trusted advisor—not just a form-filler
  • Like solving puzzles, spotting issues before they become problems, and explaining the why
  • Appreciate structure, clear expectations, and teammates who pull their weight
  • Want to keep learning and sharpening your tax and accounting skills
  • Prefer a professional environment that takes the work seriously—but not itself too seriously

Job Details

  • Job Type: Full-Time
  • Schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM (standard hours)
  • Work Location: In person (Tucson, AZ) with limited hybrid flexibility on select days
  • Salary Range: $60,000 – $80,000 annually, depending on experience and credentials, plus performance-based bonuses

Benefits

  • 401(k) with employer matching
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Life, disability, and AD&D insurance
  • Health Savings Account (HSA) & Flexible Spending Account (FSA)
  • Paid time off and paid sick time
  • Continuing education and licensing support
  • Tuition reimbursement
  • Employee assistance program
  • Employee discounts

Tax Season Reality (Let’s Be Honest — No One Is Wearing a Cape)

Tax season is busy—there’s no way around it. From January through April, workloads increase and deadlines matter. We believe in working hard without burning people out:

  • Clear expectations and planning ahead
  • Reasonable hours relative to public accounting norms
  • Team support when things get heavy
  • A strong preference for fixing processes instead of glorifying chaos

If you’re looking for a firm that treats tax season like a shared responsibility—not a survival contest—you’ll appreciate how we operate.

Why Work at Desert Rose

  • Client-focused firm with an emphasis on quality, accuracy, and long-term relationships
  • Collaborative, supportive team environment—no siloed misery
  • Leadership that respects professional judgment and common sense
  • Opportunity to deepen client relationships and grow professionally over time
  • Exposure to a wide variety of tax and accounting situations

Additional Information

  • Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States; sponsorship is not available for this role.
  • Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check, consistent with applicable laws.

Desert Rose Tax & Accounting is an equal opportunity employer. We value professionalism, integrity, and respect—for our clients and for each other.

If you’re looking for a place where your skills are valued and your work actually matters, we’d love to hear from you. If not, we wish you accurate depreciation schedules wherever you land.
