Job description

Position Summary
The Accountant is responsible for completing the agency's day-to-day accounting activities, including payroll processing, accounts payable and receivable, bank deposits, general ledger entries and reconciliations, and preparation of audit and grant documentation. This role ensures all financial tasks are performed accurately, timely, and in compliance with agency policies and GAAP, providing essential support to the Accounting Department and contributing to strong financial stewardship of the organization.
Essential Functions
  • Demonstrates a clear understanding of the Covenant House Mission and history;
  • Understands and complies with all Agency policies and procedures;
  • Maintains the agency's accounting activities in accordance with the agencies' policies and procedures and generally accepted accounting practices;
  • Agency payroll processing, monthly and quarterly payroll tax reconciliations, accrued leave reconciliations, and other payroll related reporting;
  • Prepares accurate accounts payable and receivable on a routine basis ensuring all accounts/vendors are accurately coded and processed using the agency's accounting system in a timely manner;
  • Performs general ledger accounting functions including assigned balance sheet

accounts to ensure reconciled and accurately allocated, and preparing journal entries for review by the Senior Director of Finance;
  • Cash management including but not limited to completing bank deposits, forwarding deposit information to appropriate Corporate contact and agency donor database manager, and preparing banking transactions for review in a timely manner;
  • Provides support in the preparation of the agency's annual audit and other internal and external reviews, as necessary;
  • Prepares monthly and quarterly grant billings;
  • Keeps supervisor fully informed at all times;
  • Any other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Education
Associate Degree in Business Administration or related field of study with emphasis in accounting, or similar. Bachelor's degree in Business, Accounting, or related field preferred.
Experience
2-3 years of professional accounting experience, education can be substituted for work experience. Demonstrated professional knowledge of accounting principles or has the ability to adapt and learn state and federal regulations in a timely manner.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities Required
  • Strong ability to relate effectively with staff, youth, and community agencies;
  • Ability to work with people of varied cultural backgrounds and tolerate differences in behavior;
  • Strong understanding of general accounting principles and payroll process;
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize multiple tasks;
  • Maintain confidentiality;
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and accounting software;
  • Intermediate to advance Excel skills (i.e. pivot tables, vlookups, formulas, data analyses);
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail;
  • Outstanding communication skills for working with front-line staff, management and board members, plus vendors, community donors and others;
  • Willingness and ability to work outside of normal business hours, and Holidays and/or weekends as needed;
  • Possess a current state of Alaska Driving License;
  • Have a clean driving record;
  • Pass federal, state and local background investigation.

Working Conditions
  • Position is established in an office setting within the Youth Engagement Center.
  • Noise level is mild to moderate, consistent with office and residential environments.
  • Must have the ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • Must have the ability to observe details within close range.
  • Must be able to remain in stationary position for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to move within the office to access files and office equipment.
  • Consistently operates a computer and related office machinery.
  • Must be able to ascend/descend stairways in case of emergency to exit building safely.
