Account Manager Startup information

What does an account manager do at a startup?

An Account Manager at a startup is responsible for building and maintaining strong relationships with clients, ensuring their needs are met, and helping them achieve success with the company's products or services. They often serve as the main point of contact between the client and the startup, handling inquiries, addressing concerns, and identifying opportunities for growth and upselling. In the fast-paced startup environment, Account Managers may also assist with onboarding, troubleshooting, and collaborating closely with sales, marketing, and product teams to deliver an excellent customer experience.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an account manager in a startup?

To thrive as an Account Manager at a startup, you need strong relationship-building skills, sales acumen, and a background in business or marketing, often evidenced by a relevant degree or experience. Familiarity with CRM tools like Salesforce, project management platforms, and digital communication systems is typically required. Outstanding adaptability, proactive problem-solving, and effective communication help you stand out in the fast-paced and dynamic startup setting. These skills and qualities are crucial for driving customer success, managing rapid change, and supporting business growth in a competitive environment.

What unique challenges do account managers face when working at a startup compared to established companies?

Account Managers at startups often encounter a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment where processes and structures are still evolving. This means they may need to wear multiple hats, adapting quickly to shifting client needs and internal priorities. Unlike larger companies with established support systems, startup Account Managers often take on broader responsibilities, such as helping shape customer onboarding or product feedback loops. This dynamic can be both challenging and rewarding, offering significant opportunities to influence growth and build strong client relationships from the ground up.

Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Key Account Manager based in Netherlands.

This is a high-ownership opportunity to manage and grow a diverse portfolio of demand-side accounts across the global travel technology ecosystem.
You will work with fintechs, banks, super apps, travel platforms, and other businesses integrating API-driven travel solutions.
The role combines commercial account management, data analysis, technical adoption, and strategic problem-solving.
You will have end-to-end responsibility for account performance, including transaction volume, conversion, revenue growth, and retention.
Working autonomously, you will identify opportunities, diagnose performance issues, and coordinate internal teams to remove barriers to growth.
Your decisions will contribute directly to regional commercial strategy within a rapidly scaling technology business.
This role is ideal for a proactive, analytical account leader who enjoys measurable targets, complex challenges, and meaningful customer relationships.

Accountabilities
  • Own a broad and varied portfolio of demand-side accounts, serving as the primary point of contact and taking end-to-end responsibility for their performance and growth.
  • Drive measurable account outcomes across transaction volume, conversion, revenue, adoption, retention, and overall customer value.
  • Monitor account performance and independently analyze complex data to identify trends, risks, growth opportunities, and areas requiring intervention.
  • Proactively identify and resolve technical, operational, supply, and commercial challenges that could prevent accounts from scaling successfully.
  • Develop and execute account growth plans, including identifying upsell opportunities and leading commercial conversations through to successful closure.
  • Coordinate with internal teams across supply, product, technology, and operations to resolve customer issues and ensure solutions align with account requirements.
  • Identify potential churn risks early and develop practical action plans to improve customer satisfaction, adoption, and long-term engagement.
  • Contribute customer insights and account-level intelligence to broader commercial strategy and help shape approaches for the regional market.
  • Maintain accurate account information and activity within CRM systems while managing priorities independently and efficiently.
Requirements
  • 5+ years of experience in account management, customer success, sales, or a comparable commercial role with ambitious and measurable revenue targets.
  • Demonstrated track record of achieving or exceeding account growth, revenue, or other commercial performance objectives.
  • Strong analytical capabilities, with the ability to independently interpret complex data, identify meaningful trends, and translate insights into clear actions.
  • Experience managing technology-enabled or API-driven products and an ability to understand how technical adoption influences customer and commercial outcomes.
  • Familiarity with CRM platforms; experience with HubSpot is an advantage.
  • Strong commercial judgment and confidence identifying, developing, and closing expansion or upsell opportunities.
  • Highly proactive and autonomous, with a tendency to develop and execute solutions rather than wait for detailed direction.
  • Comfortable engaging directly with customers by phone, email, and meetings to address issues, uncover opportunities, and strengthen relationships.
  • Strong stakeholder management and coordination skills, with the ability to bring together different internal teams to solve customer problems.
  • Fluent English and strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Based in Europe and comfortable working with a globally distributed customer base.
Benefits
  • High level of autonomy and ownership over a diverse customer portfolio from day one.
  • Opportunity to directly influence commercial strategy and account growth within a rapidly scaling technology business.
  • Exposure to a global ecosystem spanning travel, fintech, banking, super apps, and technology platforms.
  • Opportunity to work on infrastructure supporting large-scale, international travel experiences.
  • Collaborative environment with experienced colleagues across multiple global locations.
  • Opportunity to contribute to an AI-driven and API-first approach to the future of travel technology.
  • Fast-paced startup environment combining operational discipline with significant growth and innovation opportunities.
  • Career development opportunities through increased ownership, strategic exposure, and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Straightforward recruitment process typically completed within approximately three weeks.
