Accessibility Software information

What is accessibility software?

Accessibility software refers to computer programs and tools designed to help people with disabilities use digital devices and access digital content. These tools can include screen readers for the visually impaired, speech recognition software, magnifiers, and alternative input devices for those with mobility challenges. Accessibility software ensures that websites, applications, and documents are usable by everyone, regardless of their abilities. It plays a crucial role in creating an inclusive digital environment and complying with legal standards such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).

How does an Accessibility Software Engineer typically collaborate with designers and product managers to ensure digital accessibility?

Accessibility Software Engineers work closely with designers and product managers during the early stages of product development to identify potential accessibility barriers and propose inclusive solutions. They often participate in design reviews, contribute to accessibility documentation, and provide guidance on complying with standards like WCAG. Regular communication and collaboration are key, as engineers help translate accessibility requirements into technical specifications and verify that implemented features are usable for people with disabilities. By fostering a team-wide commitment to accessibility, they help create more inclusive digital experiences.

What is the difference between Accessibility Software vs Accessibility Tester?

AspectAccessibility SoftwareAccessibility Tester

Required SkillsProgramming, software development, understanding of accessibility standardsTesting methodologies, knowledge of accessibility guidelines, attention to detail
Work EnvironmentSoftware development teams, tech companies, assistive technology firmsQuality assurance teams, testing labs, tech companies

Accessibility Software focuses on creating and maintaining tools that enhance accessibility, while Accessibility Testers evaluate existing software to ensure it meets accessibility standards. Both roles are essential in making technology inclusive, often working closely within the same industry and environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Accessibility Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Accessibility Software Engineer, you need a solid understanding of web development, accessibility standards (like WCAG), and experience in inclusive design, often backed by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with assistive technologies, automated accessibility testing tools, and platforms such as ARIA, screen readers, and accessibility auditing software is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with teams and advocating for accessible solutions. These qualifications ensure digital products are usable by everyone, meeting legal standards and promoting inclusivity.

We support a wide range of digital payments choices, making transactions secure, simple, smart and accessible. Our technology and innovation, partnerships and networks combine to deliver a unique set of products and services that help people, businesses and governments realize their greatest potential.
Title and Summary
Lead Software Engineer
About Mastercard
Mastercard is a global technology company in the payments industry. Our mission is to connect and power an inclusive, digital economy that benefits everyone, everywhere by making transactions safe, simple, smart, and accessible.
Using secure data and networks, partnerships, and passion, our innovations and solutions help individuals, financial institutions, governments, and businesses realize their greatest potential. With connections across more than 210 countries and territories, we are building a sustainable world that unlocks priceless possibilities for all.
Role Overview
This is a hands-on Lead Engineer role focused on building backend and full-stack capabilities for Mastercard's next-generation Decision Management Platform, the real-time system that helps score and approve billions of payment transactions.
You will own technical areas end to end, write code, shape architecture, mentor engineers, and turn ambiguous goals into reliable services, APIs, workflow tools, and user-facing experiences.
Key Responsibilities
โ€ข Own meaningful backend and full-stack capabilities from problem definition through design, implementation, testing, deployment, and production support.
โ€ข Design and build scalable services, APIs, workflow tooling, frontend experiences, and integrations.
โ€ข Set technical direction, make pragmatic architecture decisions, and align engineers around maintainable solutions.
โ€ข Use design reviews, code reviews, and hands-on coaching to raise engineering quality and reduce complexity.
โ€ข Write code, build prototypes, and use AI coding tools to improve speed, quality, and team effectiveness.
โ€ข Work closely with product, engineering, and senior stakeholders to turn ambiguous goals into working software and measurable outcomes.
What We're Looking For
โ€ข You lead through delivery. You have shipped meaningful backend, full-stack, or product-facing capabilities in complex production systems.
โ€ข You think end to end. You connect user experience, APIs, backend design, data flows, operations, and business outcomes.
โ€ข You influence by doing the work. You guide technical direction through judgment, clear communication, and hands-on credibility.
โ€ข You care about quality. Testing, observability, security, clean interfaces, and maintainability are part of how you build.
โ€ข You are adaptable. You are comfortable with ambiguity, changing priorities, and small, fast-moving teams.
Relevant Experience
โ€ข You do not need experience in every area, but should bring strong hands-on depth in several of the following:
โ€ข Backend services, API design, service integration, and domain modeling.
โ€ข Full-stack applications, workflow tooling, dashboards, authoring tools, or operational interfaces.
โ€ข High-throughput, low-latency, event-driven, or distributed systems.
โ€ข Decisioning, rules, data, feature platforms, or real-time transaction processing.
โ€ข AI/ML systems, low-latency inference, or LLM-enabled product experiences.
โ€ข AI-assisted development and agentic harnesses
Requirements
โ€ข Strong hands-on software engineering experience building backend services, APIs, full-stack applications, or complex production systems.
โ€ข Experience owning technical areas end to end, including design, implementation, testing, deployment, and production support.
โ€ข Strong fundamentals in software design, architecture, API design, data modeling, testing, code review, secure coding, performance, and troubleshooting.
โ€ข Experience mentoring engineers and influencing technical direction through design reviews, code reviews, and clear communication.
โ€ข Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
