Title: Lab Assistant/Proctor - Accessibility Services (Part-time/Temporary)

Job Summary
Reporting to the Director of Accessibility Services, the Lab Assistant/Proctor supports the mission of the Accessibility Services office by ensuring equitable access to academic testing for students with approved accommodations. This position serves students across both the Elizabethton and Blountville campuses, rotating between locations as needed to provide consistent testing support and student assistance. The primary responsibilities of this position include administering and proctoring accommodated examinations in accordance with approved disability accommodations while maintaining the integrity, security, and confidentiality of the testing process. The Lab Assistant/Proctor plays an important role in creating a professional, accessible, and distraction-reduced testing environment that promotes student success and complies with institutional policies, federal and state regulations, and accessibility best practices. In addition to testing responsibilities, this position provides support through mentoring focused on time management, study strategies, and connecting students with appropriate campus resources. The Lab Assistant/Proctor also assists with the operation of the Accessibility Services office by maintaining accurate records, supporting daily administrative functions, managing testing lab environments, and assistive technology resources and, and contributing to departmental initiatives and student success programs.
Job Duties
  • Prepare, organize, and maintain the testing lab environment to ensure compliance with approved testing accommodations and institutional testing standards.
  • Verify student identity and confirm approved accommodations prior to administering exams using the Accessibility Services Database.
  • Schedule and coordinate accommodated testing appointments with students and faculty, ensuring all testing materials are received in a timely manner.
  • Receive, secure, distribute, and return confidential testing materials in accordance with institutional policies and testing security procedures.
  • Monitor testing sessions to maintain academic integrity while fostering a supportive, professional, and distraction-reduced testing environment.
  • Set up, operate, and assist students with adaptive and assistive technologies used during testing, including accessibility software and specialized equipment.
  • Perform routine inspections and basic maintenance of testing and assistive technology equipment, reporting malfunctions or repair needs promptly.
  • Maintain inventory of testing supplies, adaptive equipment, and accessibility resources to ensure operational readiness.
  • Ensure testing labs, computer workstations, and adaptive equipment remain clean, organized, functional, and prepared for daily use.
  • Provide students with orientation and guidance regarding testing procedures and the appropriate use of assistive technology prior to exams.
  • Communicate professionally with faculty regarding exam submission, implementation of approved testing accommodations, and the secure, timely return of completed exams.
  • Mentor students registered with Accessibility Services by providing guidance on time management, organizational skills, and effective use of campus support resources.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential documentation of student interactions, testing activities, and accommodations within the departmental database.
  • Assist with departmental administrative functions, including filing, scanning, copying, data entry, correspondence, and reparation of accessibility-related materials.
  • Support departmental outreach activities, student success initiatives, and special projects sponsored by Accessibility Services.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of student records, testing materials, and disability-related information in compliance with FERPA and institutional confidentiality standards.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal and state disability laws, institutional policies, departmental procedures, and professional standards governing accessibility services and accommodated testing.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the mission and operations of the Accessibility Services office.

Minimum Qualifications
• Associate's degree or higher from an accredited institution
• Technology Skills: MS Office Suite, Word, Excel, Outlook; digital records management systems; general operating systems and data information systems; ability to learn and operate new technologies
Preferred Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree from an institutionally accredited institution
• Knowledge of computer-based assistive technologies
• Experience working with individuals who have psychological and/or physical disabilities
• Knowledge of ADA rules and regulations
