What are Accessibility SMEs?

Accessibility Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) are professionals who possess specialized knowledge and expertise in making digital and physical environments accessible to people with disabilities. They help organizations comply with accessibility standards such as the ADA or WCAG, assess products for accessibility barriers, and recommend effective solutions. Their work often involves collaborating with designers, developers, and leadership to ensure accessibility is integrated throughout all stages of a project.

What is the difference between Accessibility Sme vs Accessibility Specialist?

AspectAccessibility SmeAccessibility Specialist
CredentialsCertifications like IAAP CPACC, CPBA, or equivalentSimilar certifications, often including IAAP CPACC or equivalent
Work EnvironmentConsults across projects, provides expertise, often involved in strategyExecutes accessibility testing, compliance, and implementation tasks
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in tech, government, and large organizations for strategic guidanceCommonly employed in IT, software development, and design teams
Search & Comparison IntentLooking for strategic, advisory roles in accessibilitySeeking hands-on, technical roles in accessibility implementation

The Accessibility Sme typically provides strategic guidance and expertise across projects, focusing on compliance and best practices. In contrast, the Accessibility Specialist handles technical tasks like testing and implementation. Both roles require similar certifications and are vital in ensuring accessibility, but they differ mainly in scope and focus within organizations.

How does an Accessibility SME typically collaborate with design and development teams to ensure accessible digital products?

An Accessibility SME (Subject Matter Expert) works closely with both design and development teams throughout the product lifecycle. They provide guidance during the planning and design phases, review wireframes and prototypes for accessibility compliance, and conduct audits of code to identify and address accessibility barriers. Regular communication with developers and designers is essential to educate, troubleshoot, and ensure that best practices—such as proper use of ARIA roles and color contrast—are integrated from the outset. This collaborative approach helps ensure that accessibility is not an afterthought, but a fundamental aspect of the user experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Accessibility SME, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Accessibility SME, you need expertise in accessibility standards (such as WCAG), assistive technologies, and a background in web or software development, often supported by relevant certifications like CPACC or WAS. Familiarity with tools like screen readers, accessibility testing software, and compliance evaluation platforms is essential. Strong communication, attention to detail, and advocacy skills help in collaborating with diverse teams and promoting accessible solutions. These skills ensure digital products are inclusive, compliant with regulations, and usable by people of all abilities.
