The Student Accessibility Services (SAS) Peer Support Assistant is a student-facing role designed to support peers registered with Student Accessibility Services (SAS) in navigating campus resources, building community connections, engaging in peer-led groups, and developing effective learning strategies. This role enhances the student experience by fostering inclusivity, confidence, and independence through compassionate, peer-to-peer support.
Duties:Student Support:- Provide peer-to-peer support for students through SAS drop-in study space.
- Support the development of time and task management skills for students with disabilities impacting executive function.
- Meet with SAS students individually to support their transition to university life.
- Provide leadership, guidance, and support in areas such as problem solving, navigating campus resources, and making appropriate referrals.
- Attend SAS outreach events to connect with current and prospective SAS students.
- Help plan and co-lead small group sessions focused on study skills, time management, and navigating student life with a disability.
- Encourage peer interaction and mutual support among students participating in SAS programs.
- Monitor and support students in SAS group study spaces.
- Keep accurate records of peer interactions and group participation as required.
- Communicate regularly with SAS staff regarding student needs or concerns that arise during peer sessions.
- Assist with tracking and reporting of student use of service.
- Assist with updating resources in the Learning Strategy area.
- Overview of services provided by the Student Wellness and Accessibility Centre.
- Training on the SAS database and appointment management system (OASIS).
- Sensitivity training with regards to awareness of disability etiquette.
- Confidentiality and FIPPA training.
- Training from relevant SAS staff to develop an understanding of the impact disability-related issues on academic performance.
- Training from the Learning Strategist in written expression interventions/strategies, reading strategies, memory strategies, and time management/executive functioning strategies.
- Training from the Assistant Technologist & Learning Strategist in relevant technologies and apps.
- Lived experience as a student identifying as having a disability and/or experience utilizing post-secondary services providing academic accommodations.
- Intersectionality with other campus equity-seeking communities an asset.
- 2 + years as a student at Brock University with a solid understanding of university navigation and campus resources.
- Current undergraduate student in good academic standing. Please note: graduate students are not eligible for this role.
- Keen interest in the accessibility/disability/inclusion field.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to demonstrate strong presentation and group facilitation skills.
- Strong interpersonal, leadership, communication, presentation,and problem-solving skills.
- Excellenttime management skills and the ability to juggle the demands of academic studies and extracurricular activities.
- Empathy and commitment to the principles of equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility.
- Experience working with or understanding of accessibility, disability services, or equity-based student support.
- Empathy, confidentiality, and a student-centered approach.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Hourly rate: $17.60
- Weekly hours: maximum 7 hours per week (excluding reading weeks and university closures)
- Contract duration: Sep 14 2026 - Apr 30 2027
