To thrive in Access Rigging Services, you need a solid understanding of rigging techniques, safety regulations, and mechanical aptitude, often supported by relevant certifications such as a Rigging Certificate or Working at Heights qualification. Proficiency with rigging hardware, hoisting equipment, and inspection systems is typically required. Attention to detail, teamwork, and strong problem-solving skills help individuals excel in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant lifting operations in construction and industrial environments.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in Access Rigging Services, and how are they typically addressed?

Professionals in Access Rigging Services often encounter challenges such as working at heights, managing heavy loads, and adapting to diverse project environments. Safety is a primary concern, so strict adherence to safety protocols and ongoing training are standard practices. Teams frequently collaborate with site supervisors, engineers, and other trades to ensure equipment is properly installed and used. Addressing these challenges involves thorough planning, clear communication, and regular equipment inspections to maintain a safe and efficient work environment.

What are Access Rigging Services?

Access Rigging Services refer to specialized solutions for safely lifting, moving, or supporting heavy loads in areas that are difficult to reach or have limited accessibility. These services typically involve the use of cranes, hoists, scaffolding, and other rigging equipment operated by skilled professionals. Access rigging is commonly used in construction, maintenance, and industrial settings where conventional lifting methods are not feasible. The goal is to ensure that materials and equipment can be transported or installed safely and efficiently, even in challenging environments.

Job description

Position Overview:
We're looking for a Crane & Rigging Superintendent / Lift Director to lead all crane operations, rigging activities, and critical lift planning on our power generation and industrial construction projects. You bring extensive experience managing crane fleets, directing complex lifts, and ensuring every pick is planned and executed safely on simple-cycle, combined-cycle, and large industrial facilities.
In this role, you'll serve as the on-site authority for all lifting operations-from mobilization through demobilization-coordinating closely with project leadership, craft disciplines, and equipment vendors to keep our projects moving safely and on schedule.
Key Responsibilities:
Crane & Lift Operations
  • Serve as the designated Lift Director for all critical, heavy, and complex lifts on site
  • Plan, coordinate, and supervise all crane and rigging operations from mobilization through demobilization
  • Develop and review critical lift plans, including load charts, rigging configurations, ground bearing calculations, and swing radius studies
  • Direct crane positioning, setup, and operation for equipment sets, steel erection, vessel installation, and module placements
  • Oversee crane and rigging activities including:
  • Hydraulic cranes, crawler cranes, and rough-terrain cranes
  • Tower cranes and self-erecting cranes as applicable
  • Specialized transport and heavy-haul rigging
  • Multi-crane tandem lifts and engineered lift procedures
  • Manage on-site crane fleet logistics, including crane sizing, selection, mobilization scheduling, and utilization tracking
  • Coordinate crane work windows, load paths, and exclusion zones with all site disciplines
Rigging & Equipment
  • Oversee all rigging operations, including sling selection, shackle sizing, spreader bar design, and below-the-hook lifting devices
  • Ensure all rigging gear is inspected, certified, and properly maintained per OSHA and ASME standards
  • Manage rigging inventories, track certifications, and ensure proper storage and handling of rigging equipment
  • Coordinate with third-party crane vendors, rigging suppliers, and engineered lift consultants
Safety & Compliance
  • Ensure all lifting operations comply with OSHA crane and rigging standards (29 CFR 1926 Subpart CC), ASME B30 standards, and site-specific requirements
  • Conduct pre-lift meetings, task hazard analyses, and lift-specific safety briefings for every critical pick
  • Verify operator qualifications, certifications, and medical fitness for all crane operators on site
  • Enforce exclusion zones, barricading requirements, and communication protocols during all lifting operations
  • Conduct daily crane inspections and ensure compliance with annual and periodic inspection requirements
  • Investigate and document any crane or rigging incidents, near-misses, or equipment deficiencies
Coordination & Leadership
  • Lead and supervise crane operators, riggers, oilers, and signal persons on site
  • Coordinate with project management, engineering, safety, and other craft superintendents on lift sequencing and schedule integration
  • Conduct daily job briefings, toolbox talks, and pre-task planning for crane and rigging crews
  • Monitor productivity, crane utilization, and rigging labor efficiency-adjusting plans to support project milestones
  • Review drawings, equipment weights, lift studies, and work packages to ensure proper execution
  • Interface with inspectors, client representatives, crane vendors, and third-party engineers
  • Identify and resolve field issues, constructability concerns, and lift conflicts
  • Support equipment setting, alignment, and turnover activities

Qualifications:
Required
  • 10-20 years of experience in crane operations and rigging on heavy industrial or power generation projects
  • Proven experience as a Lift Director, Crane Superintendent, or Rigging Superintendent on large-scale projects
  • Direct experience on gas turbine simple-cycle, combined-cycle, or similar power generation facilities
  • Strong knowledge of crane types, capacities, load charts, and operational limitations:
  • Hydraulic, crawler, rough-terrain, and tower cranes
  • Multi-crane tandem lift operations
  • Expertise in rigging engineering, including sling angles, load factors, center of gravity calculations, and below-the-hook device selection
  • Thorough knowledge of OSHA crane and rigging regulations (29 CFR 1926 Subpart CC) and ASME B30 standards
  • Experience developing and executing critical lift plans with engineered rigging solutions
  • Ability to read and interpret structural drawings, equipment arrangement drawings, vendor lift data, and specifications
  • Strong understanding of ground bearing pressure, crane mat requirements, and site access planning for heavy lifts
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills
  • Strong commitment to safety and quality
Preferred
  • NCCCO certification (Crane Operator and/or Lift Director)
  • NCCER Rigging certification or equivalent trade credentials
  • CPR/First Aid certification
  • Experience on utility-scale or large industrial EPC projects
  • Familiarity with 3D lift planning software (e.g., Cranimax, LiftPlanner, or equivalent)
  • Familiarity with both union and non-union work environments
  • Experience with heavy-haul transport, hydraulic gantry systems, or jack-and-slide operations

Work Environment:
  • Ability to work extended hours, nights, weekends, and shutdown schedules as project needs require
  • Comfortable working in industrial environments, including elevated work areas, around heavy equipment, and outdoor conditions in all weather
  • Willingness to travel or work at remote project locations

Benefits:
  • Competitive compensation paid weekly
  • Best-in-class; Medical, Dental, Vision, and LTD/STD
  • 401(k) with company match, vested day-one
  • Employee Stock Purchase Plan [ESPP]
