Job description

About the Role

Our client, a large nonprofit organization, is hiring an Access Control Technician to own their physical security systems across facilities in 13 western states. This is a hands-on role — you'll be the person who owns the access control environment end to end, from configuration and troubleshooting to verifying that vendor installs were done right.

If you've been doing access control work for an integrator and want to own a system instead of rotating between customers, this is that move.

What You'll Do

  • Configure, administer, and maintain access control systems (Avigilon and Verkada), plus video surveillance, intercom, and alarm systems
  • Work hands-on with Mercury controller boards — wiring, connections, and how they tie into the software side
  • Troubleshoot and verify vendor installations; direct low-voltage contractors on proper connections
  • Take over and integrate existing/legacy systems with new hardware — this isn't all greenfield work
  • Serve as the escalation point for access control tickets and support issues
  • Build custom system reports and audit system operation
  • Write technical documentation, standards, and procedures
  • Train IT support staff and end users on badge creation and access management
  • Participate in site surveys and design input for new installations
  • Travel regionally (roughly once a month) to support multi-site operations

What You Bring

Required:

  • Hands-on experience with Avigilon access control (ACM, Unity, or equivalent)
  • Experience with Mercury controller boards — wiring, configuration, and integration
  • Strong low-voltage troubleshooting skills — you understand how the physical layer connects to the software
  • Familiarity with RS-485 and serial device communication
  • Ability to work with existing/legacy hardware, not just new installs
  • 3+ years in access control, electronic security, or physical security systems
  • Bachelor's degree OR 5+ years of technical field experience

Nice to have:

  • Verkada access control and camera experience
  • Familiarity with assigning permissions in Active Directory or Entra ID (you do NOT need to be an AD administrator)
  • Experience with 2N intercom or Ocularis
  • Technical documentation writing experience
