Job description

Software Developer – Uncrewed Systems (UxS)

This opportunity resides with Uncrewed Systems (UxS), a business group within HII’s Mission Technologies division. Uncrewed Systems comprises unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs), unmanned surface vehicles (USVs), and autonomy software.

HII creates advanced unmanned solutions for defense, marine research, and commercial applications. Serving customers in more than 30 countries, HII provides design, autonomy, manufacturing, testing, operations, and sustainment of unmanned systems.

Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and maintain solutions to complex autonomy problems for HII UxS products.
  • Be responsible for software product and customer deliverables.
  • Document software development requirements, design, and implementation.
  • Enhance features and fix existing defects for customers.
  • Effectively communicate findings, problems, and solutions to functional, project teams, and external customers.
  • Coordinate with system, firmware, hardware, and other engineering teams to implement the highest quality software solution.
  • Participate in all phases of product development such as reviewing requirements, design, usability, risk assessment, and defects.
  • Follow software development processes and best practices.
What you will be doing...

Design, develop, document, test, and debug application software and systems that contain logical and mathematical solutions. Conduct multidisciplinary research and collaborate with equipment designers and/or hardware engineers in planning, design, development, and utilization of electronic data processing systems for product and commercial software. Determine computer user needs; analyze system capabilities to resolve problems on program intent, output requirements, input data acquisition, programming techniques, and controls; prepare operating instructions; design and develop compilers, assemblers, utility programs, and operating systems. Ensure software standards are met.

Qualifications
  • 5 years relevant experience with Bachelors in related field; 3 years relevant experience with Masters in related field; 0 years experience with PhD or Juris Doctorate in related field; or High School Diploma or equivalent and 9 years relevant experience.
  • BS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Robotics Engineering.
  • 5+ years hands‑on experience in software development and architecture design.
  • In‑depth knowledge of programming languages such as C++ and Python.
  • Experience with Data Distribution Service (DDS).
  • Experience with Linux operating systems.
  • Experience with Atlassian tools.
  • Strong knowledge of version control.
  • Experience with virtualization and containerization.
  • Debugging expertise with hard‑to‑reproduce whole‑system problems.
  • Must be a US Citizen and able to obtain and maintain a government clearance.
  • Ability to successfully function in a team with cross‑functional team members and multi‑tasking.
  • Experience with autonomous systems.
  • Experience with maritime technology.
  • Experience with maritime robotics.
Physical Requirements

Adequate visual acuity and manual dexterity for meeting the requirements of the Software Engineer family.
