Job description

Job Summary:
The primary responsibility of the academic success coach is to support youth who struggle in school to reach their goals. Academic Success Coaches will help mentors design activities with learning components and teachable moments. Coaches will meet with youth, and their mentors, to clarify and review concepts taught in class, explain processes, and help to solve specific problems. Tutoring will support classroom-centered activities, and as such, the emphasis and content of the sessions will be determined by the youth’s needs.

Education Requirements:
Associates or bachelor’s degree in the subject area or closely related field.


Desired Qualifications:
Strong knowledge of the instructional area. Knowledge on how to apply learning styles and teaching methodology to guide youth to higher levels of comprehension. Preference given to individuals who have successfully tutored before and/or are able to tutor multiple subjects. Able to work with youth with a respectful and non-judgmental attitude. Excellent organizational, communication, writing and speaking skills; Relates well in multicultural environments. For purposes of this grant, this person will report to the Multi-Regional Director.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide subject-specific content to help youth
  • Recognize the different learning styles and youth preferences
  • Create a professional and welcoming environment by modeling respect for youths’ diverse cultures, language skills, and experiences
  • Use active listening strategies to allow youth to determine content and pace of tutoring
  • Utilize listening and questioning strategies as the primary tutoring method to diagnose youth needs and monitor progress
  • Participate in professional development activities to improve tutorial skills and continue to grow cultural competence and reflection skills
  • Utilize feedback and reflection to improve practice
  • Recognize primary role to help youths become more confident, more successful, self-directed learners
  • Be direct and kind with youth at the same time
  • Provide direct assistance in the use of equipment, learning objects, and materials needed for youth success
  • Make appropriate referrals to other community resources as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Multi-Regional Director and/or Project Director
    Compensation: This is a part-time position (Avg. 10-12 hours/week)
