Position Summary:

Florida Atlantic University is seeking an Academic Advisor/ Learning Specialist - Boca Raton, FL

The Academic Advisor II/ Learning Specialist provides academic advising, learning support, fostering academic success, retention, and timely graduation. This role collaborates with coaches, faculty, and campus partners to deliver individualized support, oversee academic support programs and staff, and develop innovative initiatives that enhance student achievement, skill development, and overall success.

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Responsible to a member of the leadership team in the Student-Athlete Success Center, a division of Undergraduate Studies.
  • Responsible for developing and programming academic support for student-athletes participating in several teams.
  • Develops innovative improvements to resources and processes to assist students in course selection, career development, and personal accountability for success.
  • Develops and assists with providing academic support for student athletes with a primary focus on priority sports and students with diagnosed learning disabilities.
  • In the Learning Specialist role, oversees a caseload of student-athletes requiring high levels of academic support to assist them in developing the skills necessary to be academically successful and cope with any learning deficiencies that may hinder their academic achievement, which includes interpretation of psychoeducational evaluations and collaboration with the Student Accessibility Services office to provide the students with the necessary resources.
  • Oversees the SASC tutorial program, which includes recruiting, training, and evaluating every member of the tutorial staff. The tutor coordinator serves as the liaison between the SASC and other academic support services on campus, including C.L.A.S.S. and other tutoring units.
  • Oversees part-time staff, where appropriate (i.e., tutors, mentors, and graduate assistants).
  • Demonstrates mastery of advising knowledge across all colleges, models expertise in advising practice, and shows depth in professional engagement.
  • Provide excellent customer service and professionalism in dealing with athletics business partners, coaches, administrators, student-athletes, parents, faculty, and staff. Work with assigned teams and coaching staff. This includes regular communication with the coaches of the assigned sports.
  • Demonstrates mastery of NCAA and Conference eligibility, including progress toward degree, GPA, and degree applicability of courses in the FAU curriculum. This includes maintaining records and tracking of each student-athlete as well as maintaining current audits with each College and the Registrar. This role must apply NCAA standards to determine continuing eligibility and provide guidance on the consequences of enrollment decisions.
  • Utilize early warning resources to proactively work with student-athletes in offering support.
  • Assists with the development and implementation of student-athlete recruiting services from various teams.
  • Monitors student academic plans to ensure timely graduation using advising, academic support, and student development theories, institutional data, and research findings.
  • Provides oversight to Academic Mentors and graduate assistants, where applicable. Initiates new programming for student resource indicators to assist in skill development, time management, and academic progress reporting.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master's degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization and three years of advising or appropriate experience required.
