Job description

SUMMARY

The Optometry Assistant helps to ensure the best possible eye care experience to our patients and to provide seamless support to a team of optometrists.  The Optometry Assistant works within the optometry care team, under the supervision of the Director of Optometry, to prepare patients for exams, maintain work flow of the daily schedule, manage contact lenses trials and inventory, and manage patient referrals. 

This is a PRN opportunity, meaning on an as-needed basis to fill gaps in the schedule. Scheduled work hours would be as-needed, Monday - Friday, with 8-hour shifts scheduled within the hours of 8am-7pm. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS 

  • Collects patient ocular history (chief complaint, last eye exam and dilation, presenting spectacle/contact lens RX)
  • Accurately and efficiently creates charts and documents in patient record. 
  • Performs pretests as directed by the doctor (autorefractor with non-contact tonometry, visual field testing, retinal imaging, stereopsis, color vision)
  • Manages continuous patient work flow by effectively communicating with team members and providers.
  • Supports communication between patient and provider via portal messages related to treatment instructions, questions patients may have regarding physician's orders, use of medications, and contact lenses.
  • Schedules follow-up appointments and verifies appointment times with patients.
  • Disinfects and wipes down all equipment and instruments before each patient use. 
  • Combs schedule for correct appointment type and checks VSP eligibility for patients scheduled. 
  • Replenishes supplies as needed (trials, exam room supplies). Regularly verifies expiration dates for all contact lens trials for compliance.
  • Orders, checks in, and contacts patients for contact lens trial dispense. 
  • Uploads spectacle and contact lens prescriptions to patient portal.  
  • Manages all referrals and incoming faxes (consult letters, Rx verifications, specialist referrals.)
  • Maintains patient's confidentiality; complies with HIPAA, Patient Privacy Policies.
  • Adheres to OSHA policies and reports any perceived hazards to their supervisor or OSHA Safety Officer upon discovery.
  • Attends OSHA and other training programs as required.
  • Attends all regular Staff Meetings.

NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Other tasks and projects as assigned by supervisor, manager and/or director.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • High School diploma plus one to two years in optical or medical field.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to operate specialized equipment to perform required pre-examination tests on patients.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and manage their time.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Availability to work all operational hours as needed.
  • Must be punctual and maintain a good attendance record.
  • Compliance with AC Wellness occupational health policy.
