ABS Marine Surveyors often split their time between office work and on-site inspections at shipyards, ports, and onboard vessels. The job can involve irregular hours and travel to different locations, sometimes in challenging weather or industrial conditions. While much of the inspection work is performed independently, surveyors collaborate closely with vessel crew, shipowners, engineers, and ABS colleagues to discuss findings, safety protocols, and corrective actions. This collaborative environment enables knowledge sharing and helps maintain high standards of safety and compliance across the maritime industry.
An ABS Marine Surveyor is responsible for inspecting and evaluating ships, offshore structures, and marine equipment to ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards set by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). They conduct surveys, assess structural integrity, review maintenance records, and verify adherence to classification rules. Their role helps ensure the safety, reliability, and environmental compliance of maritime assets.
To excel as an ABS Marine Surveyor, you need a strong background in marine engineering or naval architecture, often supported by a relevant degree and previous maritime experience. Familiarity with classification society standards, inspection tools, and regulatory software systems like ABS Nautical Systems is essential. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively are valuable soft skills. These capabilities ensure thorough vessel inspections, accurate reporting, and regulatory compliance critical for maritime safety and operational integrity.
