What is an ABB DCS engineer?

ABB DCS engineers are professionals who specialize in configuring, programming, and maintaining distributed control systems (DCS) manufactured by ABB, a global leader in industrial automation. These engineers ensure the reliable operation of automated processes in industries such as power generation, oil and gas, and manufacturing. Their responsibilities often include system integration, troubleshooting, upgrading existing systems, and providing technical support. ABB DCS engineers typically have backgrounds in electrical or control engineering and are skilled in ABB's specific control platforms, such as Symphony Plus or 800xA.

What are typical challenges faced by an ABB DCS engineer when integrating new systems with existing industrial automation infrastructure?

ABB DCS engineers often encounter challenges when integrating new systems with legacy automation infrastructure, such as compatibility issues between old and new hardware or software. Troubleshooting communication protocols, ensuring minimal downtime, and maintaining data integrity during migration are common concerns. Successful integration requires strong problem-solving skills, thorough documentation review, and close collaboration with plant operations and IT teams. Proactively addressing these challenges helps ensure seamless transitions and reliable system performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ABB DCS engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an ABB DCS Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical or control engineering, process automation, and experience with Distributed Control Systems (DCS), particularly ABB systems. Job description

Senior Industrial Control Systems Engineer (DCS/PLC – ABB/Rockwell)

Picture a typical day at our Aragonite site: you start by reviewing overnight trends in WonderWare and Canary Historian, checking KPIs and dashboards that reflect the health of our control environment. A quick huddle with I&E technicians aligns calibration priorities and instrumentation repairs. Before lunch, you refine ControlLogix 5000 logic to prevent a nuisance trip, route the change through our Management of Change (MOC) process, and coach operations on the updated control strategy. The afternoon is for renewing DCS platforms (ABB 800xA), validating backups, updating P&IDs and network drawings, and guiding a contractor crew on a PLC panel upgrade—all while keeping safety at the forefront.

What you’ll own
  • Champion health and safety by modeling safe work practices, policies, and procedures—every task, every time.
  • Ensure operational readiness for the Aragonite site as a key member of the Controls Systems team.
  • Proactively manage the controls production environment; take preventative actions to avoid business-impacting incidents.
  • Implement robust logic changes to minimize plant trips and drive reliability using the Clean Harbors MOC process to control risk.
  • Coach operations and technical staff on control concepts and strategy utilization.
  • Develop, prototype, and implement process control algorithms; lead Basic Process Control and Process Optimization initiatives end to end.
  • Define and manage goals, reporting, KPIs, and dashboards for control system performance and health.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve control system performance issues using strong critical-thinking skills.
  • Continuously improve control system infrastructure, including projects to modernize and evolve DCS platforms.
  • Maintain site historians (ABB, Wonderware) and plan for Claroty integration; leverage Canary Historian where applicable.
  • Oversee reliability and maintenance of DCS/PLC hardware and software (ABB DCS, Allen-Bradley/Rockwell PLCs).
  • Maintain and routinely verify backups of critical systems.
  • Sustain and harden the process control network (PCN); configure and install TCP/IP networks.
  • Maintain network diagrams, P&IDs, and control system drawings.
  • Set up communications to remote PLCs and DCS nodes.
  • Leverage industry standards (ISA, NIST, CISA) to bolster PCN reliability and cybersecurity.
  • Direct and instruct contractors; manage the work order system, parts ordering, and critical spare parts.
  • May participate in scheduled on-call coverage during off-hours; follow safe and compliant procedures at all times.
Your background
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Chemical, or Automation/Instrumentation Engineering preferred.
  • 5+ years of control systems experience with demonstrated plant maintenance and design proficiency.
  • Fluency in P&IDs and PLC ladder logic structures.
  • Hands-on DCS/PLC programming across lifecycle stages—from concept through startup.
  • Experience with ABB DCS and Allen-Bradley/Rockwell PLCs; FactoryTalk and ControlLogix 5000; ABB 800xA Control Builder.
  • SCADA and VMware experience; capable with Windows workstations/servers, switches, and networks.
  • Analog loop tuning/troubleshooting (with or without specialized software).
  • Microsoft Office proficiency.
  • Ability to work independently and support off-hours/on-call needs.
  • Electrical installation exposure, industrial electrical systems, schematic reading, conduit pulling/bending.
  • Background with Wonderware, Rockwell, Allen-Bradley toolsets.
Why Clean Harbors
  • Health and Safety is our #1 priority, and we live it 3-6-5.
  • Competitive pay and benefits.
  • Comprehensive health coverage beginning 30 days after full-time start.
  • Generous paid time off, company-paid training, and tuition reimbursement.
  • Positive, safe, and supportive work environments.
  • Relocation assistance might be available.
