What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Aave Protocol Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Aave Protocol Developer, you need a strong background in blockchain development, proficiency in smart contract programming (especially with Solidity), and familiarity with DeFi concepts. Expertise with Ethereum, decentralized application (dApp) frameworks, and experience using tools like Hardhat, Truffle, or OpenZeppelin libraries are typically required. Excellent problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective collaboration are essential soft skills for navigating technical challenges and working within an open-source community. These abilities are vital for building secure, efficient, and innovative decentralized finance solutions that maintain the protocol’s integrity and user trust.

What are the typical responsibilities and challenges faced by a blockchain developer working on the Aave protocol?

As a blockchain developer working on the Aave protocol, your responsibilities will include designing, implementing, and maintaining smart contracts that power decentralized lending and borrowing. You can expect to collaborate closely with security auditors, frontend engineers, and product managers to ensure the protocol's reliability and user experience. A common challenge in this role is ensuring the security and efficiency of smart contracts while keeping up with rapid technological advancements and frequent protocol updates. You'll also participate in code reviews, contribute to open-source initiatives, and help troubleshoot and resolve issues raised by the user community.

What is Aave and what does it do?

Aave is a decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol that allows users to lend and borrow cryptocurrencies without the need for a traditional intermediary, like a bank. By using smart contracts on the Ethereum blockchain, Aave enables users to earn interest on deposits or borrow assets by providing collateral. The platform is known for its innovative features like flash loans, variable and stable interest rates, and a wide variety of supported tokens. Aave’s native token (AAVE) is used for governance and can also be staked for rewards.

Job description

Aave Labs builds innovative products leveraging blockchain technologies. Aave Labs' suite includes the Aave app, unleashing the Aave Protocol and its native stablecoin GHO, and Family, a design-first mobile crypto wallet. Our vision is to build a people-powered internet that benefits all.

Our culture Having cultivated a thriving, collaborative culture, our team is kind, welcoming and passionate about what we are building. We celebrate differences and seek to develop and retain the most talented people from a diverse candidate pool from all over the world. No matter where you are based, no ghost will be left behind and we appreciate every moment we get to work and have fun together.

About the role We're looking for a Senior Product Designer with a genuine eye for detail and a strong product mindset. Day-to-day, you'll be designing the future of finance - translating technical constraints and protocol mechanics into intuitive, coherent interfaces that feel simple and deliberate. You care about the details.

The spacing, the hierarchy, the state that only appears in edge cases — that's the kind of thing that matters to you, and it shows in your work. You think in systems, sweat the micro-interactions, and understand that clarity is a competitive advantage. How you can make an impact: Design end-to-end product experiences across our web and mobile products - from early exploration through polished UI Translate DeFi mechanics and data-heavy flows into intuitive, user-centered interfaces Create high-quality mockups and interactive prototypes that clearly communicate intent Contribute to and evolve Aave's design system - ensuring consistency, scalability, and craft Work closely with engineering to ensure what ships matches the design vision Partner with product to shape problem definition, user flows, and success criteria Think through edge cases, error states, and loading scenarios — not just the happy path Utilise the latest AI tools into your day-to-day work Let's connect if you have: Strong product design fundamentals - hierarchy, typography, spacing, interaction, and systems thinking are second nature Experience designing complex digital products (fintech, trading, dashboards, developer tools, or similarly technical spaces is a plus) Comfortable working in ambiguity and helping shape problems, not just solutions Experience contributing to or working within a design system A genuine eye for detail - you notice when something feels off, inconsistent, or unfinished Confident collaborating cross-functionally with product and engineering Able to clearly articulate design rationale and give/receive thoughtful critique Nice to haves: Curiosity about web3 and DeFi — we're happy to bring you up to speed if the space is new to you Experience designing data-dense or high-trust financial interfaces Curiosity about AI and how it can improve product design and daily workflows Haven't quite met all the criteria?

Let's not miss out on the chance to speak. Whilst you might not meet every single requirement, you might bring other, more exciting skills to the companies! Equal opportunities statement: Aave Labs celebrates diversity and views each and every team member as a separate individual with their own unique identity.

No matter your race, religion, gender, ethnicity, age, disability, sexual orientation or even the wallet you use, we welcome you at Aave Labs. As an equal opportunities employer, we take accountability and believe in everyone's potential to build, create and inspire changes. With a mission to build a diverse workforce, we are proud to foster a working environment in which everyone can feel safe and valued for who they are.
