What are aardvarks and what do they do?

Aardvarks are nocturnal mammals native to Africa, known for their long snouts and strong claws used for digging. They primarily feed on ants and termites, using their sharp sense of smell to locate prey and their long, sticky tongues to capture insects. Aardvarks play an important role in their ecosystem by controlling insect populations and creating burrows that provide shelter for other animals. Despite their somewhat pig-like appearance, aardvarks are not closely related to pigs or anteaters.

What are some common challenges faced by aardvark keepers in zoological settings?

Aardvark keepers often encounter challenges related to the animal's nocturnal habits and specialized dietary needs. Since aardvarks are most active at night, keepers may need to adjust their schedules or use creative enrichment to support natural behaviors during daytime hours. Additionally, sourcing and preparing a diet that mimics their wild insect-based nutrition can be complex. Close collaboration with veterinary staff and nutritionists is crucial to ensure optimal health and well-being for these unique animals.

Job description

Who We Are
Founded in 1980 as Aardvark Financial, TransMarket Group (TMG) is a privately held global markets proprietary trading firm in Chicago. We use next-generation technology to capture opportunities around the world and manage risk in financial markets. Our mission is to bless others through the services we provide and through the generous stewardship of the wealth we create.
TMG is a well-established and profitable business as a respected member of the global financial system for over 40 years, but also is like a startup because the potential of our group is at least one order of magnitude greater than what we are currently producing. We have an entrepreneurial culture and collaboratively develop our business with patience and discipline; we work hard, learn constantly, and relentlessly improve our expertise.
Description
Our Software development team designs and builds low-latency systems that allow us to trade a diverse set of instruments across a wide range of financial marketplaces. This smaller, focused team comes with a high degree of responsibility and ownership. Our systems aim to be clean and understandable while achieving low latency and robust error tolerance. The libraries you work on will become the engine of our firm's strategies.
Responsibilities
  • Design and implement network connectivity, market data, and execution libraries for our automated trading software platform
  • Work closely with our strategy teams to understand how they consume the software you write, so that you can anticipate and deliver future improvements
  • Leverage libraries you've worked on to facilitate backtesting and post-trade analysis of our trading strategies
  • Tune and refine existing components to improve performance, flexibility, and stability
  • Tools: C++, Python, Bash, Linux, SQL
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in a quantitative or technical field, plus five years of experience in software engineering, or a Master's degree in a quantitative or technical field, plus three years of experience in software engineering
  • 2-3 years of previous experience with implementing low-latency connectivity at any major exchange in C++
  • Strong knowledge of engineering software systems for low latency
  • Excellent technical and non-technical communication skills
  • Passion for the trading industry and interest in interfacing with multi-disciplinary trading teams
  • Proficiency in C++, multithreading, IPC, automated testing and benchmarking, lock-free data structures, Linux, Solarflare network stack
  • Experience with Python and/or Bash scripting, SQL, Gitlab CI/CD preferred
  • This position requires physical presence and is on-site (no remote work)

Benefits
We offer one of the most generous profit sharing programs in the industry because we believe our employees should be able to take part in our rapid growth and success. We are proud to offer more world-class benefits for our full-time employees and their families.
