What are aardvarks and what do they do?

Aardvarks are nocturnal mammals native to Africa, known for their long snouts and strong claws used for digging. They primarily feed on ants and termites, using their sharp sense of smell to locate prey and their long, sticky tongues to capture insects. Aardvarks play an important role in their ecosystem by controlling insect populations and creating burrows that provide shelter for other animals. Despite their somewhat pig-like appearance, aardvarks are not closely related to pigs or anteaters.

What are some common challenges faced by aardvark keepers in zoological settings?

Aardvark keepers often encounter challenges related to the animal's nocturnal habits and specialized dietary needs. Since aardvarks are most active at night, keepers may need to adjust their schedules or use creative enrichment to support natural behaviors during daytime hours. Additionally, sourcing and preparing a diet that mimics their wild insect-based nutrition can be complex. Close collaboration with veterinary staff and nutritionists is crucial to ensure optimal health and well-being for these unique animals.
