What is an avma?

An AVMA job typically refers to a position associated with the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) or roles that align with veterinary medicine standards set by the AVMA. These jobs can include veterinarians, veterinary technicians, researchers, and other animal healthcare professionals. AVMA ensures high-quality veterinary practices through accreditation, education, and advocacy. Many AVMA-associated jobs require specialized training and adherence to ethical guidelines.

What are some unique challenges an AVMA staff member might face when supporting veterinary professionals?

As an AVMA staff member, one common challenge is staying up-to-date with rapidly evolving veterinary practices and regulatory changes to provide accurate resources and advocacy. Staff often work closely with a diverse membership, requiring strong communication skills to address the varied needs of veterinarians, students, and technicians. Additionally, balancing administrative responsibilities with member support and policy development can be demanding, but it offers valuable opportunities to contribute to the advancement of animal health and veterinary standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a veterinarian?

To thrive as a veterinarian, you need a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree, relevant licensure, and a strong foundation in animal health, diagnostics, and surgical procedures. Familiarity with laboratory diagnostic tools, practice management software, and continuing education certifications is also important. Compassion, strong communication, and problem-solving skills help veterinarians effectively interact with clients and manage animal care. These skills ensure the delivery of high-quality veterinary services, client trust, and the well-being of animal patients.

Job description

WE BUILT THIS PRACTICE FOR VETERINARIANS LIKE YOU

If youโ€™re a veterinarian craving a better pace, genuine mentorship, and the chance to practice medicine your way โ€” keep reading.

Central Animal Hospital in Onalaska, WI is a wellโ€‘established, AAHAโ€‘accredited small animal practice with deep roots in our community. Weโ€™re not a corporate group. Decisions here are made by veterinarians who practice here โ€” including a former President of the AVMA and former Presidents of the WVMA.

Your Mentors Are Former AVMA and WVMA Presidents

Dr. Douglas Kratt served as AVMA President in 2020 and has also served as President of the WVMA. Dr. Kimberly Kratt is a former President of the WVMA and an instructor in ultrasonography. Together, they built Central Animal Hospital and are looking for the right person to grow alongside them โ€” and eventually into ownership.

Whether youโ€™re a new graduate looking for real mentorship or an experienced DVM ready to bring fresh ideas, youโ€™ll have direct, dayโ€‘toโ€‘day access to two of the most credentialed mentors in the profession. That includes handsโ€‘on training in ultrasonography from someone who teaches it โ€” not just uses it.

Why Our Doctors Love It Here
  • A true 3:1 support staffโ€‘toโ€‘doctor ratio โ€” youโ€™ll never feel like youโ€™re doing everything alone
  • Advanced tools to practice highโ€‘quality medicine: ultrasound, PRP & stem cell therapy, cold laser, inโ€‘house diagnostics, and more
  • AAHA accreditation โ€” because standards matter to us and to our clients
  • A collaborative, communicative team with weekly meetings and strong leadership support
  • A genuine path to ownership for the right person โ€” weโ€™re transparent about it from day one
Compensation and Benefits
  • Base salary $115,000โ€“$135,000 depending on experience, plus production
  • Future practice ownership opportunity
  • Continuing education allowance: $2,500/year + paid CE days
  • Paid licensing fees, DEA registration, and professional dues
  • AVMA PLIT professional liability coverage paid
  • Health insurance + 401(k)
  • Paid time off + paid holidays
  • Student loan contribution โ€” letโ€™s talk about it
And Letโ€™s Talk About Onalaska

This is one of those places most people have never heard of โ€” and then donโ€™t want to leave. Onalaska sits along the Mississippi River in Wisconsinโ€™s Driftless Area: scenic bluffs, outstanding outdoor recreation, excellent schools, affordable housing, and a genuine sense of community. No bigโ€‘city chaos. Just a great place to build a career and a life.

What Weโ€™re Looking For
  • DVM or VMD from an AVMAโ€‘accredited institution
  • Wisconsin veterinary license (or eligibility)
  • New graduates are welcome and encouraged to apply
  • A genuine love for patients, clients, and collaborative teamwork
Additional Qualifications
  • Current WI License
  • Ability to type and navigate various computer programs.
  • Ability to handle a fastโ€‘paced working environment.
  • Able to work well with a team.
  • Individual who will add to our diversity and continued to grow with our hospital
  • Ability to use best medical judgment.
  • Able to show a high level of empathy, confidence, and humility.
