Job Description

GeneDx is seeking a Software Engineer - Lab Informatics (FT, 40 hours) to work at the Gaithersburg, MD location Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

 GeneDx is a rapidly growing CAP and CLIA certified diagnostic genetic testing laboratory for molecular genetics. Our historic mission has been to make clinical diagnostic testing available for people with genetic conditions and their families. We apply cutting edge technologies that provide a wide array of molecular genetic diagnostic tests, including whole exome sequencing and next-generation sequencing panels. Role: The GeneDx Software Engineer -- Lab Informatics works on the production genomic laboratory informatics team developing and utilizing programs for the collection, storage, management, analysis, and reporting of clinical sequencing data.

Essential Duties:

  • Develops new and modifies existing applications and systems, including the translation of laboratory requirements into technical specifications for development and the support of existing legacy systems
  • Develops software and user interfaces for laboratory applications
  • Updates existing laboratory applications
  • Translates laboratory requirements into technical specifications for development
  • Conducts system and unit testing
  • Provides user and technical support for lab informatics systems
  • Creates detailed technical documentation for software and testing
Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • MS in computer science or a related field with at least 2 years of professional software development experience OR BS in computer science, molecular biology, genetics, or a related field with at least 4 years professional software development experience
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Python or another major scripting language (Ruby, Perl)
  • Demonstrated Linux command-line proficiency including Bash/Shell scripting
  • Experience with Git, SVN, or other version control systems
  • Experience with relational databases (Microsoft SQL, MySQL, Postgres)
  • Experience working in Windows, Linux, and HPC(SGE/Slurm) environments
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in a development team

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2+ years CLIA/CAP/NY State/FDA laboratory informatics experience
  • Experience with genomic or next generation sequencing data and laboratory processes
  • Experience with automated testing and continuous deployment
  • Experience with software project management systems/concepts (JIRA, Kanban, etc.)
  • Knowledge of web application concepts (MVC, Jquery, etc.)
  • Experience with Docker
  • Experience with VBA
  • Experience creating and maintaining software documentation in a regulatory environment
