What is a 911 engineer?

911 Engineers are professionals who design, implement, maintain, and troubleshoot the technical systems used in emergency response centers, such as 911 call centers. They ensure that communication networks, software, and hardware supporting emergency calls are reliable and up-to-date. Their role is critical in making sure that emergency calls are received and dispatched without delay or technical errors. 911 Engineers often collaborate with public safety officials, IT specialists, and vendors to optimize and secure these vital systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 911 engineer?

To thrive as a 911 Engineer, you need a solid background in telecommunications, networking, and emergency services technology, often supported by a degree in engineering or related field. Familiarity with Next Generation 911 (NG911) systems, CAD (Computer-Aided Dispatch) software, and relevant certifications such as NENA or APCO are highly valuable. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are critical soft skills for addressing technical challenges and collaborating with public safety officials. These skills ensure reliable emergency response systems and the safety of communities relying on rapid and accurate dispatch services.

What are some common challenges 911 engineers face when maintaining emergency communication systems?

911 Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring system reliability during high call volumes, staying current with evolving technologies, and coordinating with multiple agencies for seamless integration of communication networks. Job description

Join Axon and be a Force for Good.
At Axon, we're on a mission to Protect Life. We're explorers, pursuing society's most critical safety and justice issues with our ecosystem of devices and cloud software. Like our products, we work better together. We connect with candor and care, seeking out diverse perspectives from our customers, communities and each other.
Life at Axon is fast-paced, challenging and meaningful. Here, you'll take ownership and drive real change. Constantly grow as you work hard for a mission that matters at a company where you matter.
About Axon 911
Axon 911 brings together Prepared and Carbyne under Axon. Together, we are creating the only platform that combines modern 911 infrastructure with an AI intelligence layer-helping public safety agencies move faster, make better decisions, and deliver better outcomes in the moments that matter most.
911 is the backbone of public safety, yet the professionals behind it have long been held back by outdated technology. Axon 911 is here to change that. Joining this team means more than taking a job-it means helping shape the future of emergency response and building a safer, more connected world.
Position Overview
Axon 911's Carbyne Voice team is building the infrastructure that handles emergency calls - in the cloud. This is not a monitoring layer on top of existing telephony; it is the actual call-handling engine, responsible for every packet, every route, and every millisecond of uptime in a life-critical system.
As a Staff UC Software Engineer, you will help design, build, and maintain this infrastructure, ensuring that no call fails - ever. Your work will directly influence the reliability of 911 dispatch for PSAPs across the country, while advancing one of the most novel cloud-native voice platforms in public safety.
This is a hybrid role, with an expectation of four days per week in our Manhattan office.
What You'll Do
  • Design and develop cloud-based voice infrastructure handling SIP routing, call state management, and redundancy for emergency 911 systems
  • Build and maintain integrations with telephony providers, PSAPs, and external partners, ensuring end-to-end call reliability in production environments
  • Drive major features and architectural evolution of the voice platform
  • Collaborate closely with operations, networking, and engineering teams to ensure system visibility, reliability, and alignment on infrastructure changes
  • Participate in on-call rotations or incident response for production voice infrastructure, given the zero-failure requirement of the system
What Makes You a Great Fit
  • Deep experience with VoIP/UC systems and SIP protocol. You have written or integrated SIP-based applications and can speak fluently about the protocol's behavior
  • Cloud platform experience, ideally AWS. You understand how to build distributed, fault-tolerant systems in the cloud, not just in hardware-based telecom infrastructure
  • Familiarity with open-source VoIP tools such as FreeSWITCH and Kamailio. Direct experience with these is a strong signal; adjacent experience is welcome
  • Comfort operating in a highly cross-functional environment. You work fluidly with networking, operations, and product teams and communicate technical complexity clearly
  • We believe this role requires someone who thrives under meaningful responsibility. Someone who understands that every call handled well is an opportunity to help, support, and ultimately save lives
Benefits that Benefit You
  • Competitive salary and 401k with employer match
  • Discretionary time off
  • Paid parental leave for all
  • Medical, Dental, Vision plans
  • Fitness Programs
  • Emotional & Development Programs
  • And yes, we have snacks in our offices
