How much do 6g welding jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 21, 2026, the average hourly pay for 6g welding in the United States is $29.79, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $23.32 and $34.13 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is 6G welding?

A 6G welding job involves working with pipe welding in a fixed 45-degree position, where the pipe cannot be moved. This is considered one of the most challenging welding positions because it requires welding in multiple positions—horizontal, vertical, and overhead. Welders in this role must be highly skilled in different welding techniques, such as TIG, MIG, or stick welding. 6G-certified welders are in high demand in industries like construction, oil and gas, and manufacturing due to their expertise in creating strong, precise welds on pipelines and structural components.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed for 6G welding?

To excel in 6G Welding, you need advanced welding techniques, strong hand-eye coordination, and a thorough understanding of welding codes and blueprints, typically backed by certification (such as AWS or ASME). Mastery of tools like TIG, MIG, and stick welders, along with experience using pipe alignment and inspection equipment, is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and a commitment to safety are standout soft skills in this field. These skills ensure high-quality welds in complex pipe positions, promote safety, and support efficiency in demanding industrial settings.

What are some common challenges faced by 6G welders on the job?

6G Welders often work in demanding environments where they must weld pipes in fixed, difficult positions, which can require extended periods of standing, bending, and maneuvering tools in tight spaces. Maintaining consistent weld quality despite awkward angles, heat, and confined workspaces can be challenging and requires both technical expertise and physical stamina. Additionally, meeting strict safety and quality standards is crucial, as 6G welds are often used in critical infrastructure such as pipelines and power plants. Team collaboration is also important, as welders must frequently coordinate with inspectors, engineers, and other tradespeople to ensure successful project completion.

How much does a 6G welder make?

A 6G welder typically earns between $20 and $40 per hour, with annual salaries ranging from approximately $40,000 to $80,000 depending on experience, certifications, and location. Skilled welders with certifications like AWS or ASME and experience in pipe welding tend to earn higher wages, especially in industrial or construction environments.
