Maintenance Mechanic - 1st Shift
Location: Chicago, IL 60609

Reports To: Director of Operations

Staffing Network is hiring a Maintenance Mechanic for a large food manufacturing company that processes and packages nuts, candies, snack products, and other food items. We are seeking a skilled maintenance professional with experience troubleshooting and repairing industrial equipment in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Position Summary
The Maintenance Mechanic will perform hands-on preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing of mechanical and electrical systems daily. This position supports the achievement of production goals by ensuring the proper functionality, reliability, and uptime of manufacturing and packaging equipment.
Key Responsibilities
  • Perform preventive, predictive, and emergency maintenance on production and packaging equipment.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and PLC-controlled systems.
  • Diagnose equipment failures using structured root cause analysis.
  • Complete work orders, preventive maintenance tasks, and repair documentation within the CMMS.
  • Install, modify, test, and commission new equipment and production lines.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, blueprints, and OEM manuals.
  • Support processing equipment including roasters, coating systems, conveyors, packaging machines, scales, metal detectors, and facility utilities.
  • Partner with Production, Quality, Sanitation, Warehouse, and Operations teams to maximize equipment uptime.
  • Maintain spare parts inventory and identify critical replacement components.
  • Follow all Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), GMP, SQF, HACCP, OSHA, and company safety policies.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives, equipment upgrades, and cost-saving projects.
  • Maintain a clean and organized maintenance shop and work area.
  • Assist outside contractors during installations and major repairs.
  • Train machine operators on basic equipment care and safe operation.
  • Provide backup support for other departments as needed.
QualificationsRequired Qualifications
  • 3-5 years of maintenance experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong knowledge of maintenance principles, policies, and practices.
  • Experience with high-speed processing and packaging equipment.
  • Knowledge of PLC-controlled systems, pneumatics, electrical schematics, single-phase and three-phase motors, conveyors, and packaging machinery.
  • Experience using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Experience with AC/DC electrical systems, calibrated measuring instruments, hydraulic systems, and pneumatic systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, schematics, and technical documents.
  • Ability to perform preventive and predictive maintenance programs.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
