What is a 5G RAN manager?

A 5G RAN (Radio Access Network) Manager is a professional responsible for overseeing the planning, deployment, optimization, and management of 5G wireless network infrastructure. They ensure that the network meets performance, reliability, and coverage targets by coordinating with engineers, vendors, and other stakeholders. Their role involves monitoring network health, troubleshooting issues, implementing upgrades, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. Additionally, they may be involved in budgeting, reporting, and strategic decision-making to support network growth and efficiency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 5G RAN manager?

To excel as a 5G RAN Manager, you need expertise in radio access network (RAN) technologies, cellular architecture, and network optimization, typically supported by a degree in telecommunications, electronics, or a related field. Familiarity with network management tools, OSS/BSS systems, and certifications such as CCNA or relevant vendor certifications are often required. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills are crucial for guiding teams and ensuring effective coordination between technical and business stakeholders. These skills ensure optimal network performance, smooth implementation of 5G solutions, and the ability to adapt to evolving technologies.

What are some common challenges faced by a 5G RAN manager when coordinating with cross-functional teams?

As a 5G RAN Manager, one of the primary challenges is ensuring seamless communication and alignment between different teams such as network engineering, operations, and IT. Balancing technical requirements with organizational goals can be complex, especially when deploying new 5G sites or integrating new technologies. It is essential to manage timelines, resource allocation, and resolve technical issues efficiently while keeping all stakeholders informed. Effective collaboration, proactive problem-solving, and strong leadership skills help address these challenges and ensure successful 5G network deployment and operation.

  • Lead UE log collection and field testing to support eNB/gNB feature development
  • Build software tools and database queries to analyze RAN performance and tune eNB/gNB parameters to optimize KPIs
  • Manage and prioritize network issues and work with developers to resolve them
  • Troubleshoot and maintain RAN lab infrastructure in collaboration with partner teams

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline
  • Experience with RAN parameter configuration, optimization, and performance analysis
  • Experience with Python for test automation and data analysis, along with experience in Linux and code repositories (Git)
  • Experience developing, executing, and managing LTE/5G-NR test cases (including test planning and results tracking)

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • 2+ years of experience with eNB/gNB and/or modem validation
  • 2+ years of lab and/or field experience in new product introduction or product certification
  • Strong understanding of LTE and 5G-NR protocols with hands-on experience debugging issues at the PHY, MAC, and RRC layers
  • Experience with UE log analysis and associated software tools (QXDM/XCAL)
  • Experience with RAN lab equipment, including testbed setup and RF troubleshooting
  • In-depth knowledge of 3GPP specifications and R17+ RAN features
  • Experience with RAN lab equipment, including testbed setup and RF troubleshooting
  • Strong skills in debugging and performance optimization; exceptional analytical skills and engineering fundamentals

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Willing to work extended hours and weekends when needed
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
