What is 5G protocol testing?

A 5G Protocol Testing job involves verifying and validating the functionality, performance, and compliance of 5G network protocols. It includes testing layers such as RRC, NAS, and PHY/MAC to ensure interoperability between network elements and devices. Engineers use test tools like Wireshark, UE simulators, and protocol analyzers to troubleshoot and optimize network performance. This role requires knowledge of 3GPP specifications, scripting, and automation to execute test cases and analyze log files.

What does a typical day look like for someone working in 5G protocol testing?

A typical day in 5G Protocol Testing involves preparing and executing test cases, analyzing logs and test results, identifying protocol-related issues, and collaborating closely with development and network teams. You may spend time using specialized tools to simulate network scenarios, document defects, and participate in meetings to discuss project status or troubleshooting efforts. Testers often work in a dynamic environment that may require adapting to the latest 3GPP standards or technology updates. This role offers the opportunity to build expertise in advanced telecommunications and is an excellent stepping stone for career growth into senior testing, integration, or network engineering roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in 5G protocol testing, and why are they important?

To excel in 5G Protocol Testing, you need a solid background in wireless communication standards, protocol stack knowledge, and hands-on experience with telecom testing tools, often supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as Wireshark, UE simulators, protocol analyzers, and industry certifications like ISTQB or similar are commonly expected. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and effective communication enable testers to work efficiently within cross-functional teams. These capabilities are vital for ensuring network reliability, troubleshooting complex protocol issues, and delivering high-quality 5G products.

  • Execute research into 3GPP protocols (NGAP, GTP, etc.) to identify crashes and logic flaws using stateful fuzzing techniques.
  • Perform static and dynamic analysis on compiled telecom binaries and firmware to understand undocumented protocol logic.
  • Support the development of custom Python3 scripts for protocol decoding and automating analysis of "closed-box" systems.
  • Assist in mapping state machines within 5G session management flows using symbolic or concolic execution tJools.
  • Analyze signaling and data plane components to identify potential attack surfaces in 5G Core and RAN environments.
  • Use debugging tools and packet analysis software (e.g., Wireshark) to inspect protocol traffic and hardware state.
  • Document research findings and contribute to the development of technical security reports.

Qualifications:
Required:
  • 3 years of professional experience in software exploitation, reverse engineering, or protocol development.
  • Proficiency in software development (C/C++, Python).
  • Working knowledge of networking protocols (TCP/IP, SCTP, HTTP/2).
