Job Title: Machine Builder
Job Description
This role focuses on building custom capital equipment from the ground up, including mechanical assembly, integration of pneumatic and hydraulic systems, and mounting of electrical components. You will interpret complex schematics and blueprints, assemble precision components to tight tolerances, and test completed machines to ensure they operate safely and reliably according to customer specifications.
Responsibilities
- Lay out, plan, and complete mechanical subassembly work on large and small frame weldments, ensuring a high degree of accuracy for close tolerance assemblies, including bearing surface fits and machine bed surface assemblies.
- Mount commercial components such as bearings, pneumatic components, and drive systems onto structural frames and weldments according to engineering drawings and specifications.
- Perform mechanical fastening and mounting of electrical components to electrical panels and electrical enclosures in a safe and organized manner.
- Work from pneumatic and hydraulic schematics, as well as written and verbal instructions and your own technical knowledge, to determine the correct location and placement of commercial components, pneumatic and hydraulic assemblies, machined parts, and fabricated parts.
- Determine the optimal location and placement of assemblies and components to ensure proper function, serviceability, and adherence to design requirements.
- Troubleshoot mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and basic electrical issues during assembly and testing, identifying root causes and implementing effective solutions.
- Use hand tools, power tools, drills, conduit benders, pipe threading equipment, and measuring devices such as volt meters, continuity testers, and test bench equipment to complete assemblies and verify functionality.
- Drill and tap holes accurately in various materials to support mounting and assembly of components.
- Work safely with electrical systems in the 220–480 V range as part of machine assembly and testing activities.
- Test completed machines to verify proper operation, confirm that all connections are correct, and ensure the equipment meets performance and safety expectations.
- Interpret and work with custom wire diagrams and schematics, many of which are unique and complex due to the custom-built nature of each machine.
- Collaborate with team members and other departments as needed to resolve technical issues and ensure machines are delivered on time and to specification.
- Maintain a clean, organized work area and follow all safety procedures and company standards throughout the build process.
Work Environment
The role is based in a brand-new, temperature-controlled facility that is very clean and well maintained. The building is fully air conditioned and heated, providing a comfortable environment year-round. The workforce is approximately 50 people, fostering a family-type atmosphere and close collaboration across teams. The facility includes a cafeteria with a market-style setup for convenient meals and breaks. The position follows a standard shift schedule, with some overtime required after initial training, depending on project needs. You will work with a variety of industrial tools and equipment, including hand and power tools, drills, conduit benders, pipe threading equipment, and electrical test instruments such as volt meters, continuity testers, and test bench equipment. The machines you build are custom and often complex, providing a technically engaging environment where you will regularly interact with pneumatic, hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical systems in a production setting.
