What are the most common day-to-day responsibilities of a 4D planner in a construction project?

As a 4D Planner, your primary responsibilities include integrating project schedules with 3D models to produce 4D simulations, updating timelines based on project progress, and coordinating closely with project managers, BIM coordinators, and other stakeholders to resolve scheduling conflicts. You’ll regularly attend coordination meetings, analyze project data, and prepare visual simulations that help the team anticipate and address construction sequencing issues. Additionally, you may be tasked with maintaining accurate documentation and ensuring all updates are reflected in the latest schedules and models. This role is both analytical and collaborative, requiring you to bridge the gap between technical planning and real-world execution on site.

What is a 4D planner?

A 4D Planner integrates project scheduling (time – the 4th dimension) with 3D models to create visual simulations of construction activities. They use specialized software like Synchro or Navisworks to link project timelines with digital models, helping teams foresee potential conflicts and optimize workflows. This role enhances collaboration, improves planning accuracy, and reduces risks by identifying inefficiencies before construction begins.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the 4D planner position, and why are they important?

Succeeding as a 4D Planner requires expertise in construction planning, project scheduling, and a strong understanding of Building Information Modeling (BIM) processes, typically supported by a degree in engineering, construction management, or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as Autodesk Navisworks, Primavera P6, and Synchro Pro, as well as BIM certifications, is highly advantageous. Strong communication, problem-solving abilities, and attention to detail are crucial soft skills that enhance team collaboration and project success. These competencies are vital to effectively integrate 3D models with timelines, optimize workflows, and ensure projects are delivered on schedule and within scope.

Role Title:

Mine Development Planner

Reports to:

Mine Planning Superintendent

Job Type:

Full-time Regular

Location:

Tucson, AZ

About Hudbay:

Hudbay (TSX, NYSE: HBM) is a copper-focused mining company with three long-life operations and a world-class pipeline of copper growth projects in tier-one mining-friendly jurisdictions of Canada, Peru, and the United States.

Hudbay’s operating portfolio includes the Constancia mine in Cusco (Peru), the Snow Lake operations in Manitoba (Canada) and the Copper Mountain mine in British Columbia (Canada). Copper is the primary metal produced by the company, which is complemented by meaningful gold production. Hudbay’s growth pipeline includes the Copper World project in Arizona, the Mason project in Nevada (United States), the Llaguen project in La Libertad (Peru) and several expansion and exploration opportunities near its existing operations.

The value Hudbay creates and the impact it has is embodied in its purpose statement: “We care about our people, our communities, and our planet. Hudbay provides the metals the world needs. We work sustainably, transform lives, and create better futures for communities.” Hudbay’s mission is to create sustainable value and strong returns by leveraging its core strengths in community relations, focused exploration, mine development and efficient operations.

Mission:

To create sustainable value and strong returns by leveraging our core strengths in community relations, focused exploration, mine development and efficient operations.

Purpose of Role:

The Mine Development Planner (MDP) acts as the primary link between long-term strategic planning and physical site execution. The role is responsible for leading the "pioneering" planning phase, which involves overseeing the critical transition of raw terrain into a functional, large-scale open-pit mining operation.

ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Pioneering & Infrastructure: Oversee early-stage site preparation, including clearing, grubbing, topsoil management, and the strategic sequencing of haul roads, drainage systems, and waste rock dumps.
  • Strategic Alignment: Develop 0–2 year schedules to ensure immediate "boots-on-the-ground" work aligns with Life of Mine (LOM) goals and does not interfere with future pit expansions.
  • Water & Risk Management: Design essential diversion systems and drainage for year-round stability and ensure all initial ramps and catch benches meet strict geotechnical safety requirements.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all early development and earthworks comply with environmental permits and safety standards, such as MSHA or OSHA.
  • Contractor Oversight: Manage specialized earthmoving contractors who are typically utilized during the early stages of mine development.
  • Operational Liaison: Serve as a "translator" between the mine planning office and the field operations team to navigate unexpected geological or hydrological conditions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION:

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience: 5–8+ years of experience in large-scale open-pit mining.
  • Technical Proficiency: Expertise in industry-standard mine planning software, specifically Deswik or Hexagon, and Civil 3D.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: A deep understanding of environmental permitting and safety regulations (MSHA/OSHA).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Greenfield Specialization: A proven track record specifically in pioneering, greenfield development, or the start-up and expansion phases of a mine.
  • Advanced Modeling: Proficiency in 4D modeling (integrating 3D space with time evolution).
  • Heavy Earthworks: Specific experience managing heavy earthworks and the contractors associated with these activities.
  • Complex Problem Solving: Demonstrated ability to visualize spatial evolution and quickly adjust designs to meet field conditions.
