A 4D Developer is a software developer who specializes in using the 4D platform, a relational database management system with an integrated programming language. They design, develop, and maintain applications, typically for business process automation, data management, and custom software solutions. Their responsibilities include writing code, debugging, optimizing database performance, and integrating third-party tools. 4D Developers often work with SQL, scripts, and APIs to enhance functionality.

What does a 4D developer do?

A typical day for a 4D Developer often involves designing, developing, and maintaining custom business applications using the 4D development platform. You might spend time writing and debugging code, optimizing existing database structures, and collaborating with project managers and end-users to gather requirements and address technical issues. Team meetings are common to review progress and align on project goals, and you may also coordinate with non-technical departments to ensure software meets organizational needs. Frequent problem-solving and adapting to new technology updates keep the role dynamic and engaging. Being proactive and responsive are key to excelling in this environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 4D developer?

A 4D Developer should have strong programming skills in 4D (formerly 4th Dimension) development environments, a solid grasp of database management, and relevant experience in software engineering. Familiarity with 4D's integrated development tools, experience with client-server architectures, and knowledge of scripting languages such as SQL or JavaScript are highly beneficial. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are valued soft skills in this position. Ryan Companies is looking for a forward‑thinking VDC Engineer to join our team in Chicago. In this role, you won’t just be managing data; you’ll be an integral part of the design and construction lifecycle, leveraging a sophisticated suite of virtual tools to bring complex projects to life across the spectrum. We are seeking a proactive problem‑solver with a strong foundation in construction engineering or architecture and a genuine drive to master the latest industry software.

Responsibilities
  • Create and integrate a construction model for use in coordinating construction activities and conflict resolution between design and construction disciplines, including modeling architecture, structural, MEP, site design and other disciplines as necessary.
  • Identify clashes between building systems and construction materials to resolve conflicts before encountering them on‑site.
  • Facilitate meetings for coordination of construction and design disciplines, inclusive of subcontractors and vendors, in relation to the construction model.
  • Create 4D schedules to coordinate construction model with the project schedule; update 4D schedules to track progress, convey short‑term activities (e.g., 2‑week look‑ahead) and manage critical path milestones.
  • Complete quantity take‑offs from model to be used for estimating, material orders and work planning.
  • Leverage construction model for staging and onsite logistics; review shop drawings with construction model for accuracy; coordinate with other disciplines to process shop drawings.
  • Track RFIs and use construction model to assist in responding to them.
  • Assist with project punch lists and incorporate items into construction model.
  • Identify areas with restricted access to easily and effectively maintain building systems; update construction model to be used as a record model and given to the owner at the completion of construction.
  • Add to library of common virtual construction elements to be used on future projects.
  • Work with Director of Virtual Design and Construction to define best practices and identify areas for improvement; assist in writing work instructions and creating training videos.
  • Spend a large portion of time on project job sites; travel may be required for those sites, including out‑of‑state jobs.
  • Other responsibilities as specified by the Hub VP of Operations, Division Manager or Director of Virtual Design and Construction.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree preferably in Construction Engineering/Management, Architecture or Engineering.
  • Minimum of 1 year in the construction or design field.
  • Software system implementation and/or upgrades experience preferred.
  • General knowledge of estimating techniques, cost control, and material pricing.
  • Strong interest in construction related technology.
  • Ability to quickly learn multiple applications related to virtual construction (Navisworks, Revit, Civil3D, SketchUp, Horizontal Glue, VICO, Tekla).
  • Basic understanding of multiple construction scheduling techniques.
  • Understanding of application development, customization and implementation.
  • Ability to prioritize workload and create action plans to ensure commitments are met.
