A 48/96 schedule is a work shift pattern commonly used by firefighters, where personnel work for 48 consecutive hours (two full days) and then have 96 consecutive hours (four days) off. This arrangement is designed to provide longer stretches of off-duty time, which can improve work-life balance and reduce commuting. The schedule is popular in many fire departments across the United States and is considered an alternative to the traditional 24-hour on, 48-hour off schedule. It can help with firefighter fatigue management and often leads to improved morale among crew members.
