What is a 3D SolidWorks?

A 3D SolidWorks job involves using SolidWorks, a computer-aided design (CAD) software, to create, modify, and analyze 3D models and assemblies. Professionals in this role work in industries like manufacturing, engineering, and product design to develop detailed technical drawings and prototypes. Tasks may include designing mechanical components, performing simulations, and ensuring models meet industry standards. Strong knowledge of SolidWorks tools, drafting techniques, and material properties is essential.

What are the typical daily tasks of a 3D SolidWorks professional?

As a 3D SolidWorks professional, your day-to-day tasks may include creating and modifying detailed 3D models, generating technical drawings, collaborating with engineers and project managers, and reviewing design specifications to ensure accuracy. You might also be involved in creating assemblies, running simulations for stress or motion analysis, and preparing files for manufacturing. Communication with other team members, such as engineers, drafters, and quality control specialists, is a routine part of the job to ensure designs meet project requirements and industry standards. This hands-on, collaborative approach helps turn innovative concepts into production-ready solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed for a 3D SolidWorks role?

To succeed in a 3D SolidWorks position, you need strong skills in computer-aided design (CAD), mechanical drafting, and a relevant engineering background, often supported by a degree or certification in mechanical engineering or a related field. Mastery of SolidWorks software, as well as familiarity with Product Data Management (PDM) systems and industry-standard file formats, are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are key soft skills that enhance performance in this role. These competencies are crucial for producing accurate designs, working efficiently with engineering teams, and ensuring seamless product development from concept to manufacture.

Job description

3D Modeler / Project Manager
DS Michael Furniture — Contract Furniture Manufacturer

DS Michael Furniture is a contract furniture manufacturer serving the hospitality and commercial industries, known for high-end, custom-crafted pieces. We're looking for a detail-oriented 3D Modeler / Project Manager to join our team and grow into a key role overseeing projects from concept through completion.
About the Role

You'll manage projects from start to finish — engineering and overseeing furniture manufacturing and production. Using SolidWorks, you'll create shop drawings and 3D working models of custom furniture and cabinetry for fabrication, client communication, and approvals.
As Project Manager, you'll handle field measurements, purchase materials for production, and keep projects organized and on track. You'll start by managing smaller projects, with the goal of growing into a fully established Project Manager role.
Responsibilities

  • Manage furniture projects from start to finish, including engineering and production oversight
  • Create shop drawings and 3D models in SolidWorks for fabrication and client approval
  • Read and interpret shop drawings/blueprints for furniture fabrication
  • Perform field measurements and purchase materials for production
  • Program CNC operations using AlphaCAM
  • Communicate professionally with clients, vendors, and team members
  • Collaborate effectively in a team-oriented environment
  • Adapt to varying day-to-day responsibilities as project needs shift
Qualifications — Strongly Preferred

  • 2+ years of SolidWorks experience
  • Strong communication skills (email and phone)
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills
  • Aptitude for CNC programming in AlphaCAM
  • Ability to read shop drawings/blueprints for furniture fabrication
We look forward to having you join our team!
