OVERVIEW
 

OVERVIEW

Responsible for product, design, and engineering of new products, modifications to existing products, and product updates to accommodate new guns and accessories for existing holster & pouches for the Bianchi and Safariland Brand. Work with Research & Development technicians & Technical Specialists to create innovative & safe solutions to meet external, internal customer requirements for the police, military, and civilian handgun market.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design new products and accessories for the police, military, and civilian markets.
  • Design cowhide leather holsters, pouches and accessories
  • Design molded foam/nylon holsters, belts and accessories
  • Design injection molded and thermo-formed plastic components with emphasis on moldability, manufacturability and efficiency for assembling of finished goods
  • Supply technical drawings and 3 dimensional models of specialized parts, tooling, and assembly
  • Design tooling/mandrels and necessary parts/assemblies using SolidWorks
  • Works with Technicians, internal Technical Specialists, Duty Gear Category and outside vendors to fabricate prototypes of products in development.
  • Prototyping of new parts and products utilizing 3D printers and various hand tools and techniques.
  • Design tooling and necessary parts/assemblies using SolidWorks, PowerShape, Draftsight and other software as needed.
  • Produce technical drawings, assembly drawings, costing, and Bill of Materials using company ERP system.
  • Solve problems with and provide technical advice to the production and quality control departments
  • Compile all existing engineering documentation and organize it into the approved design documentation format
  • Maintain multiple CAD and documentation databases for different company categories
  • Perform physical testing on engineering prototypes
  • Ensure components and assemblies adhere to applicable industry and business standards
  • Evaluate the function, safety and appearance of products to ensure they have a practical design
  • 3 plus (3+) years of 2D and 3D modeling and drafting
  • 3 years minimum experience with Solidworks, CAD, and MS Office, etc.
  • Three plus (3+) Years of Product Design and Development.
  • Ability to utilize 3D scanner and produce watertight, machinable files from handmade prototype tooling.
  • Broad range of mechanical component knowledge and manufacturing processes.
  • Experience with plastic part design for moldability.
  • Experience with rapid prototyping tools for product development.
  • Drawing database management experience.
  • Comfortable working with and around firearms. 

QUALIFICIATIONS

  • Candidate should have a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering or Technical degree with equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of Solidworks 3D CAD software.
  • Daftsight or equivalent 2D drawing programs
  • Microsoft Excel, Word, and Powerpoint
  • Operate industrial sewing machines (Consew leather machine and flatbed)
  • Knowledge of grades of leather
  • Knowledge of leather finishing and tanning processes
  • Knowledge of nylon and synthetic materials used in holster manufacturing
  • Basic project management skills.
  • Ability to build functional working prototypes using various pieces of equipment.
  • Design and manufacturing process knowledge for plastics injection molding
  • Experience with CNC, rapid prototyping and 3D modeling
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Expertise in handguns and knowledge of the firearms industry is highly desirable
  • Highly inventive – able to think outside of the box
  • Technical/Mechanical Skills – Comfortable around machining equipment and hand tools.
  • Verbal Communication – Ability to understand and relay information in meetings and one-on-one conversations in an accurate and detailed manner.
  • Written Communication - Presents numerical data effectively; Able to read and interpret written information. Ability to read and convert information from drawings, prints or sketches. Ability to organize and manage large amounts of data and product information accurately and effectively.
  • Problem Solving - Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner; Gathers and analyzes information skillfully; Develops alternative solutions; Works well in group problem solving situations; Uses reason even when dealing with emotional topics
