Job Summary:

The Plumber supports the operations and maintenance mission at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center by performing skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing systems and equipment. This role ensures the reliability of critical infrastructure that directly supports patient care, medical operations, research environments, and daily facility functions. The Plumber works independently and with the WRNMMC facilities team to maintain compliance with all regulatory standards, safety requirements, and military medical facility expectations.

Primary Job Functions:

  • Assemble, install, maintain, and repair piping, fittings, fixtures, and equipment for heating, water, and drainage systems in accordance with all applicable specifications, plumbing codes, and WRNMMC safety standards.
  • Perform corrective and preventive maintenance on plumbing infrastructure throughout the facility, including water heaters, drinking fountains, toilets, sinks, PRVs, pumps, backflow devices, and other plumbing equipment.
  • Diagnose system issues, identify root causes, ensure proper installation of new components, and maintain system functionality in compliance with regulatory requirements such as TJC, NFPA, OSHA, and facility policies.
  • Run drain snakes and operate high-pressure jetters to clear clogged pipes, restore drainage, and resolve blockage-related issues throughout the medical center.
  • Install, maintain, and repair plumbing systems across WRNMMC buildings, including domestic water, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, medical gas systems (if certified), sump systems, and specialty plumbing unique to healthcare environments.
  • Respond promptly to service orders, customer calls, and emergency repairs to minimize impact on patient care and mission-critical operations.
  • Perform inspections, testing, and documentation of plumbing systems within the CMMS in accordance with WRNMMC and contract requirements.
  • Coordinate with hospital departments to schedule system outages and shutdowns, ensuring minimal disruption to medical operations and patient care.
  • Collaborate with HVAC technicians, electricians, carpenters, and other skilled trades to support facility-wide maintenance activities and project work.
  • Participate in after-hours on-call rotations, emergency responses, and high-priority corrective maintenance as required.
  • Adhere to all WRNMMC safety protocols, infection control requirements, and environmental health standards.
  • Provide recommendations for system improvements, upgrades, and long-term reliability enhancements.

Education, Experience and Certification:

Required: High School Diploma or equivalent

Preferred:  Trade School or vocational training 

Required: 3-5 Years of experience in commercial, institutional, or government facility  

plumbing experience

Preferred: Experienced in Healthcare or military medical facility experience

Preferred: Experienced in Medical gas systems experience

Preferred: Valid plumbing license depending on task scope

Preferred: Journeyman-level certification depending on task scope

Working Conditions:

Work is performed throughout WRNMMC in patient care areas, research spaces, mechanical rooms, and support buildings. Strict adherence to infection control, PPE, and hospital protocols is required. The position supports a mission-critical facility where reliability, professionalism, and responsiveness are essential.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong understanding of plumbing codes and infrastructure common to large medical facilities.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Experience with medical gas systems preferred but not required.
  • Ability to work in mechanical rooms, crawlspaces, rooftops, and active patient care environments.
  • Strong communication, customer service, and teamwork skills.
