Job description

Overview

CTG is seeking a Mainframe Workload Automation Engineer to support enterprise batch scheduling infrastructure for our client. This role focuses on workload automation engineering, batch operations reliability, and production support across IBM z/OS and hybrid distributed environments.

Location

Hybrid schedule based in the Phoenix, AZ metro area

Duration

6-month contract with option to convert after 6 months

Work Authorization

Candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S. without current or future sponsorship requirements.

  • Strong IBM z/OS batch processing and JCL experience
  • Hands-on enterprise workload automation and scheduling experience
  • Production support troubleshooting in high-availability environments
  • Experience supporting hybrid mainframe and distributed platforms
Top Responsibilities
  • Design, maintain, and support enterprise batch scheduling environments across IBM z/OS and distributed platforms
  • Administer workload automation tools such as Control-M, IBM Workload Scheduler (TWS/IWS), CA7, ESP, OPC/Zeke, or similar platforms
  • Build and manage complex job streams, calendars, dependencies, and end-to-end batch workflows
  • Ensure reliable execution of high-volume batch processing across mainframe, Linux/Unix, and cloud environments
  • Troubleshoot job failures, abends, scheduling conflicts, and dependency issues in production
  • Support JCL-based job execution, dataset processing, and enterprise batch operations
  • Monitor workload execution using tools such as OMEGAMON, Control-M Monitoring, or equivalent solutions
  • Manage integrated file transfers including Connect:Direct, FTP/SFTP, NDM, and related workflow integrations
  • Support disaster recovery (DR) scheduling, testing, and failover execution activities
  • Partner with application teams, DBAs, systems programmers, and operations teams to maintain workload integrity and operational stability
  • Optimize batch windows, scheduling performance, and workload balancing
  • Participate in production support escalation and shared on-call rotation
  • Contribute to automation and modernization initiatives including DevOps integration and API-based scheduling orchestration

  • Enterprise workload automation and scheduling tools experience
    • Control-M
    • IBM Workload Scheduler (TWS/IWS)
    • CA7
    • ESP
    • OPC/Zeke
    • Tivoli Scheduler
    • or similar enterprise scheduling platforms
  • Strong IBM z/OS mainframe batch processing knowledge
  • JCL proficiency and batch execution expertise
  • Experience with workload monitoring tools such as OMEGAMON
  • Experience with file transfer systems including Connect:Direct, FTP/SFTP, and NDM
  • Strong troubleshooting skills in enterprise production and scheduling environments
  • Understanding of disaster recovery scheduling and enterprise resiliency practices
  • Experience supporting hybrid environments across mainframe and distributed systems
  • Strong coordination and communication skills across technical and operational teams
Experience
  • 5+ years of experience in mainframe job scheduling, workload automation, or batch operations engineering
  • Experience supporting large-scale enterprise environments preferred
