Job description

Environmental Services Technician


MAIN FUNCTION:

Performs multiple cleaning tasks in accordance with Environmental Services procedures and Hospital policies and procedures. Collects non-medical and medical waste, operates waste autoclave, labels medical waste containers for collection. Collects corrugated boxes. May include floor care maintenance and required equipment to maintain floors and carpeting. Responsible for linen distribution: stocking carts, delivery of clean linen and collection of soiled linen, putting clean linen away on shelves. Responds to house pages when assigned.

RESPONSIBLE TO: Environmental Services Director/Supervisor


MUST HAVE REQUIREMENTS:

GENERAL FOR EVERYONE

Able to occasionally lift up to and sometimes exceeding 50 pounds.

Able to stand for prolonged periods of time.

Hours may flex due to needs of the department.

Job requires continuous walking, grasping, frequent reaching and occasional bending, kneeling and squatting.

No written disciplinary action in the last 12 months.

Role eligible for applicants age 17 and older.

LINEN SPECIFIC

Job is aerobically challenging and requires a high degree of physical activity.

Lifting/carrying laundry bags weighing up to 25 pounds.

Repetitive lifting laundry bags and hoisting overhead onto soiled laundry carts.

Pushing/pulling laundry carts weighing up to 850 pounds.

Required to reach down 38 inches into laundry tubs and carts to lift and transfer stacks of clean linen onto supply carts.

PREFERRED ATTRIBUTES:

High School Diploma or GED

Institutional cleaning experience.

Floor care maintenance experience.

Good customer service skills.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Employees in this position:

1) Scheduled weekends and holidays - every other weekend and every other holiday

2) May be exposed to blood/body fluids or airborne pathogens. Wears appropriate barriers.

POSITION EXPECTATIONS

* Maintains a safe working environment; reports unsafe working conditions and/or maintenance concerns to Environmental Services Supervisor.

* Uses wet floor signs appropriately and removes them in a timely manner.

* Correctly operates and maintains vacuum cleaners.

* Handles trash according to departmental/hospital procedures and places it in proper containers.

* Keeps cleaning carts clean, stocked, and ready to use.

* Keeps tools/equipment ready for use. Returns them to their proper location after use.

* Performs floor care duties as assigned:

a. Operates floor scrubber and floor burnisher appropriately.

b. Strips, waxes and burnishes floors.

* Performs trash disposal duties as assigned:

a. Collects and transports solid waste to designated dumpsters.

b. Collects and transports bio-hazardous waste to autoclave holding area and processes it according to procedure.

c. Notifies appropriate waste hauler for collection and pick-up as needed.

d. Operates autoclave sterilizer correctly.

* Performs additional area assignments and/or assists co-workers as needed.

* Reports work activity on Weekly Reports.


RELIEF CHARGE DUTIES:

* Directs department personnel in the absence of the Environmental Services Supervisor and the Environmental Services Charge Technician.

a. Distributes staff work assignments.

b. Obtains coverage for call-offs or distributes work load among existing staff per policy.

* Responds to house pages on day shift.

LINEN ROOM RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Trains and orients new employees to responsibilities and established procedures set for the following:

a. Linen Carts and Deliveries, Delivery and stocking of linen carts.

b. Stocking of Linen Shelves, Putting away linen received from linen supplier.

c. Soiled Linen Pickups, Collection and handling of soiled linen from inside the hospital and placing it into carts for linen service pickup.

* Delivers and stocks clean linen on assigned linen carts according to established procedures.

* Stocks carts with clean linen for Wooster Fire Departments according to established procedures.

* Delivers uniforms and Dr. scrubs to proper departments.

* Stocks linen storage shelves with clean linen from linen supplier neatly and in a timely manner.

* Collection and handling of soiled linen from inside the hospital and placing it into carts for pickup by outside linen supplier.

* Lifts soiled linen bags up to and sometimes exceeding 60 pounds.

* Pulls and transports linen exchange carts weighing a minimum of 475 lbs. and exceeding 850 lbs.
