3Pl Edi information

What is a 3PL EDI specialist?

A 3PL EDI specialist is a professional who manages electronic data interchange (EDI) between third-party logistics providers (3PLs) and their clients, carriers, and suppliers. They ensure smooth and accurate electronic communication of documents like shipping notices, invoices, and order confirmations. Their role involves setting up, maintaining, and troubleshooting EDI systems, as well as mapping and translating data formats to ensure compatibility between different organizations’ systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 3PL EDI specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a 3PL EDI Specialist, you need a solid understanding of electronic data interchange (EDI) standards, supply chain processes, and logistics operations, usually supported by relevant education or experience in logistics or IT. Familiarity with EDI translation software, ERP systems, and knowledge of ANSI X12 or EDIFACT standards are typically required, along with certifications like EDI Professional or related IT credentials. Strong problem-solving, communication, and attention to detail are crucial soft skills for troubleshooting data issues and collaborating with internal and external partners. These skills are essential for ensuring accurate, efficient data exchange between third-party logistics providers and their clients, which is critical to smooth supply chain operations.

What are some common challenges faced by 3PL EDI specialists when integrating with new clients or partners?

3PL EDI specialists often encounter challenges when integrating with new clients or partners, such as differing EDI standards, varying data formats, and unique business process requirements. These differences can lead to mapping errors, data validation issues, or delays in onboarding. Effective communication, strong problem-solving skills, and familiarity with multiple EDI platforms are essential to ensure seamless integration and maintain smooth supply chain operations.

Job description

We are hiring a Senior Manager, Supply Chain Systems & Solutions to serve as Supply Chain's systems and integrations owner - the in-house expert on how orders, inventory, and data flow across our distribution ecosystem. Reporting to the VP of Distribution and partnering closely with Business Technology, this role supports all four Distribution teams (Inventory Planning, Logistics, Warehousing & 3PLs, and Imports) and owns the standards that keep every connection documented, tested, and audit-ready.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Every role at Trove Brands is critical to our successful functioning. Your specific responsibilities as a part of Team Trove will include:
  • Leading our EDI platform transition through completion - owning the roadmap, the vendor relationship, and phased retailer cutovers with zero order disruption
  • Owning EDI trading-partner governance across all retail partners: mapping, testing, and change-control standards, plus retailer compliance and chargeback prevention
  • Owning the systems side of our 3PL and freight-partner integrations end-to-end, validating ERP-to-3PL data flows (inventory, orders, shipments, receipts) across a growing multi-node fulfillment network
  • Building and maintaining the Distribution systems documentation library - every integration documented, version-controlled, and test-scripted, with recovery runbooks and no single points of failure
  • Serving as Supply Chain's lead liaison to Business Technology for our ERP (Acumatica) - owning supply-chain-side requirements, testing, and data integrity
  • Building and maintaining the data flows behind executive shipping and operations reporting, and representing Distribution in cross-functional order-visibility initiatives
  • Running a solutions intake process for the four Distribution teams - scoping and delivering durable, documented system solutions and identifying automation opportunities across the ERP, planning, 3PL, and EDI ecosystem

Required Qualifications:

We seek team members who are adept at contributing their personal expertise to a collaborative work environment. For this role, we are looking for someone with the following skills and experience:

  • 7+ years of experience in supply chain systems, EDI management, or ERP integration roles with increasing ownership and scope
  • Hands-on EDI expertise: map development, testing protocols, trading-partner onboarding, and retailer compliance
  • ERP integration experience including requirements definition, testing, and data integrity ownership
  • Experience integrating 3PLs or WMS platforms, ideally across a multi-node distribution network
  • A track record of building documentation, change control, and governance where they didn't exist before
  • The ability to translate operational needs from planning, logistics, warehousing, and imports teams into durable system solutions
  • Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including external vendors and retail partners
  • Bachelor's degree in supply chain, information systems, or a related field - or equivalent hands-on experience

Desired Qualifications:

  • SPS Commerce experience
  • Acumatica
